Hirelings

What would be the best way to add Hirelings/Henchmen/Mercenaries to the combat table and to the party sheet.

And how would I give these NPC's experience points so they can level.

I create them as PCs so the player who they belong to can control them and handle all the bookkeeping.

Or convert the NPC to PC using that option.
