View Full Version : FGU freezes on start (Surface 7 Pro)

I have a Surface 7 Pro, running Windows 11 and installed FGU via Steam.

When I start FGU it is immediately unresponsive.
The mouse cannot be reasonably moved as long as the launcher window is on focus. Any action takes about 20-60 seconds to react.
When I put FGU in the background the tablet is running normal again.
Using the touch screen I can manage to start the demo campaign. Performance stays abysmal and I cannot reasonably use any controls. I did not manage to type anything with the keyboard in the console.
Trying to start without a mouse at all does not change the behaviour (at first i thought it's a touch screen problem and connected the mouse, hoping it would react)
I also tried starting outside of steam. Behaviour was the same.

When I open the settings from the launcher, they show up at once and are normally responsive. Back to the launcher it freezes again.

Are there any known issues or tips that might help?

Welcome to the FG forums. Sorry you're having performance issues.

Firstly - when you're experiencing this issue, open Windows task manager and see if it's the CPU or GPU that's getting overloaded. If it's the GPU, try some of the things mentioned here: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1638006786/Reducing+GPU+Usage

Ok, I used the windows task manager and tried to observe any overload states.

I had the task manager window next to the launcher window, and I observed some strange behaviour.
When FGU freezes, the whole image freezes, including the task manager. When I used the touchpad to minimize FGU, the tablet was immediately responsive again and the task manager was updated.
It seems to be only a GFX-update-issue. Whenever I minimize and reopen the FGU window, the last tast gets displayed. For example I click on "Load game" .. nothing happens. I minimize, reopen -> Loading tab is displayed, frozen. I click "Join game" .. nothing happens. I minimize, reopen -> Join game screen is displayed, frozen again.

There are just no display updates (on the whole system) while FGU is on top.
Afterwards there is no spike on the task manager to be seen. GPU load is high (90%+).

The system has an Intel Iris Graphics card. Driver is up to date.

Well, I got the idea, that maybe I can still use console commands, when I plug in a keyboard and type blind.

I managed to set vsync to 4, and the game got responsive again. It also still worked after a restart.

Maybe that solved the problem for good. The surfce pro has a lot of display on limited performance, maybe the combination of the high res and some high update rate simply brought it into a state of deadlock.

Thank you for your support.

Hopefully that will be the fix for you!
