View Full Version : Some players don’t see shared maps

It was all working fine 2 weeks ago but tonight 2 of the 4 connected players couldn’t see the shared maps. They saw the distance markers or drawings and they saw the tokens and the grid but not the image of the maps. Some PC had darkvision and the GM removed the LOS and lighting effects. Any ideas?

Usually this means that whatever is being shared is being blocked either from being sent from the DM machine or being received by the client. Check that everyone has whitelisted FGVTT in their anti virus https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1303052290/Whitelisting+or+Creating+Exceptions+for+Antivirus+ Applications
It could also be that too much has been shared and some players are running out of memory, or that there's some settings on either the DM or players routers which is throttling data transfer. So suggestions on what to look for here https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1981349889/Network+Troubleshooting

We'll look into that! It looks like it's gonna be fun to troubleshoot...

Would this happen to be on a large or complex map?
Is the GM's internet upload speed solid?
Is it only some maps or one map? Have you tried others and seen the problem?
Try making a copy of the map and sharing it fresh.

I don't know the size of the map, we are 4 players and 2 of them didn't see it. I think the GM internet is solid. We never had any issues with it in 5 years of VTT. We had the issue with the 2 maps we had but we could give it a try with others. I looked at my firewall logs and can't see anything wrong. I cleared the cache on my computer and hope to be able to give it a try next week. What bugs me is that both players that didn't see the maps are using the same internet provider with the same integrated firewall. They might have blocked something but I should see it in the logs if that was the case

Are you the DM or one of the affected players?
Whilst the affected players clearing their cache files might help that won't do anything if you are the DM (or an unaffected player). The Fantasy Grounds logs might help at least as far as showing that the files was requested and whether it was received or not.
You'd need to compile the logs as soon as the problem manifests itself. You can submit the logs here and mention the names of the images that are causing the issue. See here for how to do that. https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1242136781/How+to+Compile+Logs
Don't forget also that the issue could be on the DM machine; but it does sound like something on the players side of things especially since they are both on the same connection. It may be worth rebooting their router to see if that helps; and maybe getting them to join one at a time rather than both at the same time.

I'm the affected player and official troubleshooter of the group!

If it comes back I'll do this

We don't use the same connection but we have the same provider. The unaffected players use another one. i ussually let the provider manage the firewall from the router and I haven't seen logs of blocked traffic that evening. it might be from my PC's firewall. We'll need to find time to test stuff before next session.

So one thing that can happen and I believe is references in the links by Mr Z. is that the player cache can become very large if this campaign has been running for a long time and the GM has not unshared images no longer needed.
If that's the case, have the GM go and unshare any images that are no longer needed. The affected players may need to delete their cache as mentioned and then rejoin.

If your firewall was blocking connectivity you probably wouldn't be able to connect to the GM at all.
Check for setting like flood protection on your router - which might allow the initial connection but then disallow future connections due to increased traffic from one source - such as opening a few modules and the GM sharing one or more large maps/images.
