Zones Question

It there a certain way to set up zones of a VTT battle map. they seem a bit confusing to me. Ran my first Fallout 2d20 game last night and that was one thing that gave us a bit of trouble. What is the best way to use zones?

I just used a scene image with vertical lines dividing it up into long, short, etc range.

If you're using a map and there's no clearly delineated areas (e.g. rooms in a vault provide clear zones), I'll quickly draw on the maps small lines to indicate the zones - not making just a grid, but utilizing defined areas within the terrain. If you don't have a map and need to track relative positions, do something like Zacchaeus mentions.
