View Full Version : Mouse freezing and USB controller crashing

I've been experiencing some interesting behavior and crashes ever since updating to 4.6. Whenever I (as the DM) open an image, I start getting periodic (every couple seconds or so) mouse freezes that make the game unplayable. On occasion, I also get a low USB controller resources notification or even experience a full crash/restart of my system's USB controller.

I did some digging through event viewer and found that my audio controller/interface (Focusright Scarlett 18i20 gen3) appears to be the device that is actually crashing, and when it goes down it seems to sometimes take USB on the whole with it.

I can also test some other troubleshooting options upon request, as my system setup is a bit unusual, particularly with regard to audio. The typical audio chain for the system in question is as follows: Windows > VB Matrix (virtual audio routing software) > Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (via ASIO) > speakers/headphone/etc.

Some troubleshooting steps I've taken so far and the outcomes I've found:

Updated audio interface driver: no noticeable change in behavior

Turn off the audio interface: seems to prevent the instability when loading images in FG so far, but it's far from ideal to play without sound when we coordinate via video chat and I've only been able to test with one client connected.

Uncheck "Sound Enable" under Options > Game in Fantasy Grounds: seems to be working so far, but I've only been able to test with one client connected.

Removing VB Audio Matrix from the audio chain doesn't appear to have any noticeable impact, but I figured I should disclose its presence for completeness.

Attempts to reproduce the issue were done using the image "Storm-Giants.webp" from the purchased "Storm King's Thunder" module in the FG store to ensure reproducibility by the devs in the event that you want/need to dig deeper on your end.

Potentially relevant hardware used to test:

CPU: AMD 5950x
Memory: 128GB DDR4
Operating system: Windows 11 Pro, build 23H2
Audio Device: Focusright Scarlett 18i20 - firmware 1644, driver 4.124.3, connected via USB-C
GPU: nVidia RTX3090, driver 566.36

More hardware info, logs, and troubleshooting available upon request.

Unfortunately, we do not have any control over the drivers/behaviors on your system; nor how the Unity game engine (which our software is built on) handles that interaction with the operating system.

It looks like there are known issues on the Internet regarding that audio device.

It seems like the sound card's drivers need to be updated: https://downloads.focusrite.com/focusrite/scarlett-3rd-gen/scarlett-18i20-3rd-gen
Your ver: 4.124.3
Legacy ver: 4.65.5

Focusrite Control 3.20 / includes latest drivers

Literally the first bullet point in the list of troubleshooting steps.

I've tried a couple more tests as well since the initial post. One that gave a particularly odd result was that the periodic freezes also occur when FGU is running inside a windows server 2025 virtual machine in vmware workstation 17.6.0.

In the meantime I've been running my games from a spare computer, so I'm not without recourse for now, but I wanted to be sure to report any odd behavior I notice.

Nothing comes to my mind except for uninstalling the drivers and the program with something like Iobit uninstaller to delete the residues (reg files, etc). Restart. Only then reinstall.

This issue seems to have been resolved for me in either patch 4.8.0 or 4.8.1. Leaving the post up for posterity.

Never mind: seems it is happening with some but not all images now. Doing further digging.
