Hi everyone, I've been eyeing Traveller for a long time and finally pulled the trigger during the Summer Sale. I picked up the core rules bundle and the Pirates of Drinax bundle. Being completely new to Traveller, I'd like some advice whether there is a particular adventure that I should start with that is considered beginner friendly that will slowly step me through the mechanics of the game and help me learn as I go. Is Pirates of Drinax good for this or should I pick up some of the standalone adventures available?

I plan to play solo as this is more for me to learn a system that looks fun and indulge my love of sci-fi. If there is anything else I should consider purchasing, I want to do it during the sale.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Marches Adventure 1: High and Dry (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=MGP40001TRVMG2E) tends to get brought up a lot as a great starter adventure (and it does get the character's a starship).

For a Pirates of Drinax campaign, I've seen quite a few suggestions for Reach Adventure 1: Marooned on Marduk (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.php?id=MGP40006TRVMG2E) as an ideal starting point for the campaign.

Pirates of Drinax is most definitely not a beginner campaign, it is, in my opinion, one of the most complex out there.

As someone who has run Traveller for quite a long time i second either Marooned on marduk or High and dry for the first adventure, but either can be used as a leap board into Drinax if you move what system/planet they take place on to a more appropiate area.

I am currently running a play by post game centered around Pirates of Drinax but very sandbox. The players have divided up into four different Cohorts out exploring different places in the Trojan Reach.

I agree that Marooned on Marduk is a very good start for players new to the system. Lots of good interactions can be done, the various rules can be tested out, and it is in a nice central spot for adventures to spring from. Here is the Vignette from our group's adventures there: https://dragonslayer-traveller.com/index.php?n=Category.Vignette1

For using Pirates as a backdrop for a solo game that is an interesting idea. There is lots of good scaffolding there to use as what is happening on the systems around your Traveller as you explore things as a merchant/scout/grav ball entertainer/spy/retired naval officer what ever you discover you are through character creation. (we call it Character Discovery in our game for that reason).

What I would say you need to purchase while on sale:
Core Rules
Pirates
Marooned

That starts you off well.

Central Supply Catalog 2023 - more gear, better to purchase while on sale, not needed just nice
Theories of Everything - adventure, mystery, pairs with Marduk things, not needed with all the adventures included in the Pirates bundle

Ones that I would say yes to purchase while on sale, very useful for world building and creating the small things that make a campaign interesting is the Referee Briefing series. With the sale 6 books for $32 in my mind is a better deal than the Central Supply Catalog.

Reach out with questions, the Traveller community is really good about being helpful.

Always glad for new players in our game as well.

Death Station (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/589/view)
and
Stranded (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/946/view)

Thank you for all of the great advice! I picked up the free modules in the Forge, Death Station and Stranded. I also picked up the Reach series and will start with Marooned on Marduk to get a feel for how it all works.

The appeal of Pirates of Drinax for me was that it seemed to be very "sandboxy". It speaks to that freedom to play out a sci-fi storyline in my imagination with the overall premise of the Drinax plot to follow as closely or loosely as I want. Looking forward to slowly getting into this once I feel comfortable running an adventure.

For these, I believe you mean those books on DriveThru RPG right? Or are these available for FG as well? The ones I already have as PDFs are:

1) Companions and Corporations
2) Anomalies and Wonders
3) Going Portside
4) Mercenary Forces
5) Incidents and Encounters
6) Garden Worlds

Oh my, I completely missed that post which lists all of the products. I was mostly going by the bundle contents on the FG store. This is super helpful, thanks for calling it to my attention!

Currently the portside ref briefing on steam says you can't buy it unless you own fantasy grounds classic, Just putting it out there as i tried to buy it yesterday and threw up that error.

Thank, I own all 6 of them and they run just fine. But then i also own 7 different licenses so that could be why they work.

Smithworks, is it possible to see why the Referee Briefing 3: Going Portside is marked for only classic FG.

To be fair it's most likely a steam issue rather than smiteworks was just a weird error that came up when i went to pay for my basket of goodies on steam never seen it before and i've bought quite a lot of smitework products but i don't own classic as i waited for unity and for the campaign i was running on r20 to end so i could jump ship to here lol.

Fair enough but if Smithworks also looks into it then it would be covered. And it is just a request to look at it.
