I'm an older gamer. Personally, the SRD and the promise of one great D20 universe drew me back into gaming. I read the SRD, then bought the books, and said "now what?".
The next step was Fantasy Grounds. It makes things easy. It lets me play with friends who don't live close and make new friends far away.
The big draw is the people I can play with not one particular rule system.
I'm sure 4the ed has its fans but for me its the same 'stuff' different pile.
The idea that WOTC is reducing the freedom of the SRD seems to me like a betrayal and trying to put the genie back in the bottle. I don't dispute their right to do it but I think its bad for the type of story based game I like to play.
I make my own stories and I read widely. I also like much of what I've read for d20 - why should I leave it.
People drive my gaming. If everyone was playing 4e I'd have to switch but thankfully I don't know that is going to happen.
I'm happy to be flexible - especially if its a simpler game to DM. Even as a player you have to pity the D20 DM.
For now, I'm sticking to 3.5 and looking to audition non WOTC games as well. So what if they're niche markets - niche players are interesting. I don't need more than 3 other players at a time.
Savage worlds, Castles and Crusades, Call of Cthulu, BRP, Ars Magica, Bunnies and Burrows, even Warhammer (which is more restrictive even then WOTC) - here I come. There's no shortage of game systems.
I'd love to find a public domain game that could be made popular - its not like D&D invented story telling.

Who hopes Fantasy Grounds will get more refined rather than worry too much about 4e.
