View Full Version : Fantasy Grounds Killing my Internet Speeds

When I host with Fantasy Grounds Unity, it kills my internet speeds. Not for the whole house, just for the specific device.
Here's my internet speed before hosting:
64575
Here it is while hosting:
64576
While hosting, I ran the speed test on two computers at the exact same time and it was fast for my other computer, so FGU isn't actually using much of my internet. It doesn't seem to be using a ton of resources on my computer either.

When players connect, and when you share content, and when they open allowed modules, it requires a lot of bandwidth. So a reduction on your local bandwidth would be expected.
But, if this is happening when you have no players connected etc, then that would be a concern.
TLDR; the devs will need more specific info to resolve.

Make sure that you have whitelisted FG in your anti virus software and that you don't have any QoS settings enabled (or that your ISP has enabled) on your router. It's possible that those are checking every file that FGVTT is unnecessarily downloading or uploading.

It didn't kill my bandwidth to the ISP. The rest of my house was still getting 800 mbps. My laptop is plugged directly into the router too. I even tried turning off everything else including antivirus. And yes it happened while nobody else was connected. I was just building out my campaign.
Restarting my computer seems to have fixed the issue this time, but it has happened more than once and now it's happening again today. Is there some kind of diagnostic I can run next time it happens to give you more info? I've installed Wireshark to capture packets data with FGU on and off. Going to try to see what I can find but I'm not really sure what to look for.

If you are just working on FGVTT with no-one connected then FG isn't doing anything internet wise, so it shouldn't be using any bandwidth at all. You can check whether it is or not via the Task Manager (click performance and the on the three dots top right to open resource monitor - Win 11 can't remember how you access Resource monitor in Win 10). This will give you a list of what info is being sent or received and what programs are doing the sending and receiving.
You can post your log files here in case there's anything in those that might help point in the right direction. https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1242136781/How+to+Compile+Logs

I don't think it's actually using any bandwidth. It's just somehow making my computer not able to get any bandwidth.

I don't see how to upload my log files here. Do I need to send that through customer support?

Ok I ran the following and it seems to be working (for now):
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /flushdns
Looks like maybe my network stack got corrupted and for some reason FGU was where things got crazy.

Click Go Advanced, then you can use the attachment icon or the Manage Attachments button.

I've not noticed anything while actually playing, but I have noticed that when I have my work telephony website apps up and running FG (while updating for the next session) it causes my work popups and order-entry website to load very slowly when a new call comes in. It also seems to effect the quality of the calls through the telephony system.

Where are your sourcing your images for your campaigns? Have you tried running an antivirus check on those?
