View Full Version : FGU on Linux Ubuntu 22.04 slow

Hello!

I play on Fantasy Grounds weekly, but lately, it's been harder and harder to do so on my Linux desktop. I run Ubuntu 22.04 on an Intel NUC with 16GB of memory, an 11th Gen Intel i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz (1 physical processor; 4 cores; 8 threads), Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics].

Last year, I was able to run Discord and FG at the same time on this machine. Then I had to move Discord to a laptop to let FG run by itself to avoid lag, video/audio hiccups, and freezing up. Now, even with ONLY FG running, it's gobbling system resources and I can hardly type in a notes box, and I watch as dice freeze up.

Are there settings I can fiddle with to make FG into less of a resource hog? Why has it gotten so much worse in the past few months? What's the bottleneck?

Thanks for any advice!

Chrissy

Welcome to the FG forums @echrisindy!

Are you the GM or a player?
Is this a new campaign or a long running campaign?

My system exceeds the system requirements, though I'm hazy on the graphics part. How can I tell whether my system has "Metal Support with 4GB+ VRAM"?

I'll look into the Reducing GPU Usage recommendations.

Thanks,

Chrissy

I am a player in a long running MgT2 Traveller campaign.

I am a player in a long running MgT2 Traveller campaign.
This is probably related to the issue. The GM may need to do some clearing out within the campaign - primarily unsharing things no longer needing to be permanently shared.

Can you check the size of your local cache? Go to the <FG App Data>\cache\<your campaign name> directory on your computer and check the size of the campaign.dat file.

Get to <FG App Data> by clicking the folder button in the top left of the FG startup screen.

The Iris Xe is not a very strong graphics card; so it will also be impacted by large screen resolutions (in general) and especially in FG with images maximized to desktop (in FG). You can try reducing the resolution of your desktop to something smaller than the maximum your monitor can handle to improve performance all around in any gaming application.

The campaign's cache data is 42.7 MiB.

I *think* my problem was the graphics driver. I followed directions to install an Intel driver for Linux and my initial test looks pretty good. I'll check back after my game on Thursday to say how it went.

Thanks for your help!

I was having problems a few weeks ago with FG on Linux. Every time it started up the fans would kick in and the machine would overheat. So I took a wind blower to it (they cost about £30 for a decent one with USB charger) and blew all the dust out of the machine... and voila problem solved.. Also there was a recent update to fix a memory leak in images which also helped immmensely.
