View Full Version : Locations Dragged to Sub-Locations Create Copies

I just noticed that when you create a Location, and then drag it to the sub-location of another location it creates a copy and not a link. I can't see any situation in which this would be desired.

To reproduce, Create two locations "City" and "Tavern"
Drag Tavern to the sub location of City
Edit Tavern, close tavern
Open City, from sub-location open Tavern.
Note that edits are not shown.

This workflow is the one that was suggested from this thread: Locations Created Via Sub-Locations Do Not Show in Locations Library (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?83726-Locations-Created-Via-Sub-Locations-Do-Not-Show-in-Locations-Library)

Yes, that's by design. Sub-locations are not visible in the Locations list. Only top-level locations. Locations can also be used as templates, such as for bastions.

In the linked thread you said locations created via the sub-locations option would not be in the master data list, but that if a location was created in the master data list they could be linked. That second part is not what I'm seeing.

If you create a location via the locations library list, and then drag that entry to a sub-location it copies it, it doesn't link. I don't see the use case for copying the instance instead of linking it.

I want these sub-locations to appear in the master data list, and I want them to have a hierarchy (i.e. be sub locations). But the way it acts now duplicates are being created that are hidden from the list. i.e. you can either have them in the list OR have them in a hierarchy, but not both.

I really think if that's the design intention you should reconsider. :)
Thanks

I tend to agree with LE on this one. My use case is for a set of locations in the same general area or neighborhood, such as a market that has several different shops. Each shop would be it's own location but a sub-location to the market which would have it's own description, flavor, NPCs, etc.

Finding that dragging/dropping a location to another as a sub-location creates a copy was indeed unexpected.

I'm late to this, since I only just started using the feature, and yeah. I agree with LE and wndrgndru on this. I started just playing around with locations, trying to make it work for me, and I ran into the same "this is weird and doesn't make any sense" issues he did in his other post and in this one. Seems no matter what workflow you use to build out some locations with a heirarchy the behavior is undesirable.

Reading the answers, it seems like "Locations" is really only suitable for base building? (and I'm not even convinced that it's the best choice for that in its current design).

However, there is the oddly named (so it's easy to miss) "Player Agency" extension, which offers much better support for world-building and locations, and it still works and is free. I think I'll go back to using that.

Unfortunately, Player Agency is not being maintained at this time. Though I think it still is working. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?54284-Player-Agency-Extension&p=748113&viewfull=1#post748113

I will note, that you can drag locations into the Description Field instead of the Sub-location field and they link as desired.

It would also be nice if the sub-locations were shared independently of the main location card. I just put in a Feature Request for it.

I'm surprised I had not done that. Glad you did. When its approved, please let us know the link :)

Not exactly sure how to get a link for just that one request. Here is a link to 3 requests that are similar (including the one waiting for approval, if you can see that).
2 are mine, both for the Locations cards, one to allow for Player editing of the Player portion of the card. The other is the request we are speaking of here.
The third is a request, from another user, to allow Players to edit calendar entries, for which I voted.

Nope, only 2 are visible to me. Right click on the title (once approved) and select Coipy Link and then paste here. Or click ont eh title so it loads as the only item on the page and copy the url/link. Example; here is one;

Confirmed that putting a Location into Sub Locations creates a second identically named location that not the updated when editing the location.

Glad I saw this now, will have to check over all my edits for the couple dozen sub locations to make sure they go back to being identical.

Upvoted the two Locations on the request list that are currently showing.

For systems like Traveller this is the way to have each of the various planets, starports, locations on a planet, etc. available for the GM to share with the players. It is very important to know that the content is the same no matter which link they follow to get to that entry.
