View Full Version : Easiest way to import homebrew NPCs

I'm wondering what the easiest way to import NPCs is for 3.5
I have multiple characters that I've made over the years with their statblocks, and I honestly don't know what format the base importnpc feature expects.
Thanks to the magic of AI, formatting my statblocks to the expected input is not hard, but I don't know what that is, and the addons I've tried from the Forge do not seem to work.
Any and all help appreciated!

The NPC import option in FG only works to import NPCs previously exported from FG.
If you wanted to try to reverse engineer the format, just make an NPC with the fields you are trying to capture, and export to a XML file which you can then look at the format.

Makes sense, thanks for the info!
Is there no other way to import NPCs as a block of text sort of like we can in 5e?

No, that requires specific coding to try and parse the stat block into the correct fields. No one has done the setup to identify all the stat blocks and and implement a full text importer for each one.

** Can't believe I may be contradicting Moon Wizard. be gentle **
I would say it depends on if you want the NPC to show up in the character window and look like the PCs (I believe that is what Moon Wizard is answering).
OR
Do you want them to be in the NPC section like creatures and such. If this is a possibility, then this Forge extension (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/558/view)does a nice job (although the format must be correct) and this extension (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/35/view)will try to link abilities to the wonderful Spellbook extended mod (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/415/view) so you get clickable actions.
My discord is in my signature, feel free to reach out and I can walk you through it via screen share.

No worries. I'm not able to keep up on all the extensions. There's no built-in NPC import; but perhaps the extension will do what the OP wants.

The OP has tried to use CreatureLab - they posted here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?73035-PFRPG-CreatureLab-(Revival-of-CreatureGen)&p=743109&viewfull=1#post743109 It appears they are looking at NPC imports, and for 3.5E (not PF1e). I don't know how they're progressing as there hasn't been any more posts.

Indeed that's the case! There's been no further progress other than hoping for extensions te get updated / have 3.5 compatibility.
Such is life!

Did you try the steps I outlined here? https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?73035-PFRPG-CreatureLab-(Revival-of-CreatureGen)&p=743119&viewfull=1#post743119

Not yet sir, I have it written down to create a PF campaign to use the aforementioned extension and then try your method, but I've been super short of time as of late, that's why I'm still kinda keeping my fingers crossed that a magical extension gets updated lol
I promise I will provide updates when I get to it!

I'd be very surprised if someone suddenly created a D&D 3.5E NPC parser extension.

My point being - I'd recommend looking into alternative approaches (e.g. the one I mentioned) because I doubt what you're hoping for would happen any time soon.

Yeah, like I said before that's the approach I'll be going with, but I still need time to sort other things out before doing it :)
