View Full Version : How much interest in a regular PF1e game?

Maybe an AP? Maybe a home brew? Probably more than a little 3rd party stuff (on a case by case basis) since one of the great strengths of PF1e is the original OGL!

Possible settings Midgard, Greyhawk, Spelljammer (perhaps as part of one of the other settings), or Realms? Maybe something else?

Definitely downtime, crafting, and (maybe) Leadership (probably depend on number of players). Probably no psionics (someone already mentioned it).

Ideally a shared campaign with 2 or more GMs so no one has to do all the heavy lifting.

Any input or ideas appreciated. I have an Ultimate license but am coming off of a long convalescence so a bit rusty. Definitely jonesing for a game though.

I was asked for a few more details...

Here are some of the GM notes from my last game:

When starting the campaign, speak with each player privately; ask them to jot down a single magic item they would like to have for the following levels: 1st-4th, 5th-8th, 9th-12th, 13th-16th, 17th-20th. When doing encounters (whether random or deliberate [story line]) consider putting a desired item in as a reward.

House Rule: No Spell Resistance Against Energy Damage, Unearthed Arcana, pg 174

Experience Tracking? Does the group want individual xp tracking? Slow/Medium/Fast (1-6/7-12/13-18)? Waypoint leveling?

Backstory! Urban? Rural? Other?

Do the players want to go with standard PF feat rules or use alternate rule of 1 feat per level? This increases lethality! 1 feat per level chosen.

Game lethality?

Start the game at 1st level? Start the game at 3rd level? If starting at 3rd then characters core races (as defined in the ARG) start at 3rd, featured races start at 2nd, and uncommon races start at 1st.

Initially in a Midgard campaign, only Midgard races can be chosen. Other races may 'unlock' at higher levels on a race by race basis.

Magical crafting requires the expenditure of 1hp which may NOT be regained by any means. This causes a unique diminutive mark (cf. arcane mark) which cannot be duplicated (not even by a wish spell). Downtime retraining may still be used to retrain hit points but even this will not enable the regaining of this lost hit point.

Leadership feat is allowed; each cohort or hireling or NPC that is added to the party adds +1 to the CR of the encounter. Each hireling, summoned or called creature adds +.05 to the CR of the encounter.

Could you provide more info on what sort of game would be most enjoyable? Milieu? Style? Etc.

I was actually thinking a semi-homebrew would be interesting. Like, a homebrew game world, but also incorporating official modules or AP modified a bit to fit the homebrew world?

We seem to be getting lots of looks but very few comments. I will give it another couple of days and if we don't get more interest will close the discussion.

I have had several people message me, but now none of them are answering back when I started asking about the type of game... :(

I'd certainly be interested, assuming the timing works out for me. I'm not seeing any details on that front. I'm generally only available nights (after 6pm Central), those being Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday, with Tuesday being possible but not reliable (I occasionally have to work)

My inclination would be toward an AP (not Tyrant's Grasp, though; I played part of it and read the rest after that game went south), but that can be awkward with 3PP or house rules. And having interesting 3PP stuff to try out is always a big plus to me. Whether modified AP or homebrew, I would prefer something with a decent amount of direction rather than a full sandbox. The last couple sandboxes I played in fell apart from people feeling aimless or conflicting objectives in the party.

I'm fine with XP or milestone leveling, but I don't see much point in doing individual XP since that just seems likely to cause unnecessary friction and punishment for things beyond our control. Since Pf1 removed 3.5's XP being a resource, keeping everyone the same level keeps things smooth in my opinion. If someone is missing too often, they probably just need removed.

I'm fine with any setting as long as I can find stuff to read up on it. I'm not familiar with Midgard, for instance, but I'll make an effort to change that if need be.

The crafting houserule is curious; not quite sure what to make of it. It seems odd to have it be per item, at any rate, since that obliterates consumable crafting and disincentivizes the less troublesome low-level crafting in favor of waiting to do more troublesome high-level crafting.

Lethality and character investment tend to be inversely proportional in my experience, so I'd prefer leaning toward the less lethal end, though with the understanding that stupid/suicidal decisions can and quite possibly will lead to death still.

The crafting house rule is to keep the Wealth per Level limits 'somewhat' in check. Otherwise a crafter can flood a game and blow them up completely. One of those 'been there, done that' way too many times. And it does not apply to potions or scrolls only on items, arms and armor, etc. And there are ways around it. And I totally agree stupid is its own punishment/reward.
At the moment I am leaning on an earlier AP (Serpent's Skull) but it (as written) is somewhat flawed and needs quite a bit of TLC to get into shape. I have been messaging back and forth with a couple of GMs that have ran it in the past to see what they did. There are definitely some good ideas there.
I noted you are CST (as am I) so we can almost certainly find a time that works. My last two groups were all European/East Asian and I was living in Central America so I if we could make that work, this should be a cinche.
I will post more after hearing back from a couple of other people that have messaged.
Take care

In case you guys are still looking for people, I'd be interested in a regular PF1 group.

We are still shaping out the game and people... please message me about the game YOU would most enjoy... Right now I am leaning (being pushed) to an AP with lots of filler material (most of the APs especially the older ones need it)!

Just checking back in to see if there are any further details or developments thus far.

Grey Mage

Developments are exactly what are happening... people started getting back to me and I am starting to put the adventure together (unfortunately I want to run something that was never converted to FG and is almost never run anymore). If you are one of the interested ones (you know who you are!) then please keep posting here (race, preferred class, etc) so we can keep moving forward while I get at least 3 sessions in the can...

Glad to hear things are progressing! I generally gravitate to some flavor of caster or gish, but I'd like to know what 3PP content is in before really developing ideas. If you know the general locale/environment and theme of the adventure you want to run, that will help me as well.

Grey Mage

Location will be Midgard. A voyage of exploration and colonization. Starting gold will be maximum per class. Classes and races will be restricted to Pf1e Paizo materials. Hero points is an option but will be watched closely.

Definitely still moving forward... Drop a msg about what you are interested in playing (race/class) and see if that will fit in with what others want...
