View Full Version : 5E legacy

I purchased FG and a bunch of 5E content a few years ago, via Steam, but did not get around to using it.

Now I am looking to start an online campaign and when I go into FG I see that the Players Handbook, and many others, have a (legacy) suffix. I understand why, but how do I get the non-legacy version? When I go into Steam it says I already own the Players Handbook. Is there a free "upgrade"? If so, where? If not, then how do I buy it in Steam?

Not even sure that I need the "new" version, but would like to know my options.

Have been looking for the answer in both the forums and wiki, without success. No doubt this has been answered somewhere in the past and I have just failed to find it, so thank you in advance for your time.

When the 2024 version of 5e came out late last year all of the previously published core books got (legacy) attached to their name to distinguish them from the 2024 versions of the same books. So the books that you bought now have (Legacy) in their title, but are the same books that you bought. The new books are available via the store and steam; they do not have legacy in their title (and you don't need to purchase those if you don't want to run with the 2024 rules, but at least the PHB is necessary if you do).

In steam if you search for Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, or Dungeon Master's Guide you'll see that there are two of each of those titles. Only one of them will show as being in your library. You can also tell by looking at the release date of the module in Steam or in the store. The 2024 versions were released late 2024 early 2025.

This may also fill in some gaps for you https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?82733-D-amp-D-2024-Rules-Update-and-Frequently-Asked-Questions-(FAQ)

You buy the new books off STEAM or off FG store.

Is there an easy way to search for DLC in Steam?
In the FG DLC section there is a subheading "Dungeons & Dragons Core Rules and Supplements" with a "View Full List" button next to it, but the new Players Handbook is not in this list.
However, I did eventually find it by selecting Browse then Dungeons & Dragons (to restrict the list to 353 instead of 3438), then scroll to the end of the page to get all 353 loaded (painful), then Ctrl-F to find "Player's Handbook".
The lack of a decent search function is Steam's problem, not FG's, but if anyone knows an easier way to find it then I would love to know.

You can find the item in our store and then click the Steam button if you want to utilize the store's search functionality.

I just typed “Player’s Handbook” into the Steam search bar.

Thank you ju95, browsing your store for DLC is going to be easier than browsing Steam.

Thank you Zaccaeus. I don't know why, but I have only ever used that search for games, not DLC. Also, once you click on Browse all (DLC on the FG game page) that search bar is no longer available which left me struggling.

CTRL-F pops open a search tool for web browsers. It will only find content that is on the page, but it will scroll to find things in a list. Don't know if that helps you here, but useful in other cases.
