Hey all,

I have been reading up on FG and I really like what I see. I have also downloaded the client and it seems really intuitive!

To give you a bit of gaming background on myself, I played AD&D 2nd ed. back in the day, up into the late 90's. I picked up all the core 3.x stuff but suddenly no one I knew wanted to play anymore. Now with 4th ed. comming out, I'm determined to re-aquaint myself with the hobby that held my imagination back then, and has always been at the back of my mind ever since.

So basically Im completely new to this, Ive never played with a VTT before, nor am I familiar with the 3.x rules in an intimate way as Ive never had a good chance at playing that edition. My only 3.x exposure in play was in the form of video games (a la Neverwinter Nights, Temple of Elemental Evil etc...).

I would love to play using FG but seeing as I am a complete novice, can anyone tell me if there are games for absolute beginners like me? Is the FG client easy to learn for someone not aquinted with the ruleset? I do have the core rule books for 3.x and the AD&D 2nd ed. PHB. As well I have also preordered the 4th ed core books too. I assume the books will be helpful when playing with FG?

Speaking of 4th edition, will that translate easily into FG? I do plan on learning 4e and I hear it will be fairly different from 3.x.

Anyways, sorry for rambling, I just wanted to say hi, introduce myself, and see if purchasing a FG license would be a good idea for me.

EDIT: I forgot to ask, is the user community a good size?

The books are helpful, yes, but not a requirement per see. It is like when you sit by the normal gaming table with the GM and other players really. What you can't figure out by yourself the other players will likely help you with. ((Unless they are like David and gives you faulty advice for **** and giggles. ))

There are some work on this over att www.fouruglymonsters.com (https://www.fouruglymonsters.com) it will be necesity be somewhat limited until the licenses are more clear. But there is every possibility that 4th will be playable over FG.

It is a fairly large and rather friendly community, yes.

One thing to keep in mind with FG is that all you NEED is a character sheet (and even then you can make an ultra simple blank sheet that you fill in with information). Once you have a sheet you can play any game there is out there. All the extra stuff, like libraries and rules are nice to have, but it is not necessary.

If you and your friends have the rulebooks, you can do any game (Example: I made a character sheet for Top Secret SI, my group was playing and refering to the books until I got around to putting a lot of it into the ruleset itself, but we werent stopped).

As for D&D4, Josh is working hard on a basic character sheet at FUG...it's coming along nicely, he stated he hopes its done by the time they release the books.

I really like what I hear! Thanks for the quick replies!

Since I am new to the program as well, will the learning curve for the ins and outs of the program be steep? Seeing as I am unfamiliar with the newer rulesets as well, will that make the learning curve for the program steeper?

Also as a side note, are there games that people run with FG that accept complete newbies? Or is that a rare occurence? I am thinking of getting some old friends to purchase a license as well, if they are willing, but in the meantime, it'd be nice to know if I'll be able to find a game where i can get some hands on experience, and just to have some fun.

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I am making an informed decision.

Well three sources of new games are this forum, Four Ugly Monsters forum and the new SavageWorldsOnline forum.

No doubt as soon as people get their lovely new 4th Edn books as well there'll be plenty of games where everyone is new to the system, so we can all learn together.

The basics of FG functionality are a doddle to be honest.

The learning curve is very flat for anyone who has played in a face to face RPG, including AD&D. FG is just a battlemap, dice roller and chat program. If you want to help yourself get up to speed faster - make sure you know how hot key shortcuts work.

I can't speak for others but I am utterly indifferent to lack of FG experience by a player as long as they have played in a face to face game before. I can usually walk a new player through FG in 15-20 minutes.

As far as being a 4ed newbie everyone still is - so I doubt you'll have a problem with it. I expect a bunch of 4ed Games to start shortly.

Sounds good to me, I have certainly played in face to face games before, so it seems like this would be a good way to get back into it. I suppose I will look for anyone accepting beginner players in their game, or the 4th edition games as most will be just learning that one too.

I do have the core books and will be getting the 4th edition core books as well, so that will sure be a help.
