Hello out there, a long time 1e ad&d DM. I enjoy the game, but I haven't played in a number of years. I hope to get back to doing that this year.

What did I do since I stopped DMing ? Made a plethora of maps. Learned how to make better maps. I actually get compliments on my maps now.

I was going to add something besides osric to my setup, but that will have to wait.

Have lots of reading to do, pdfs galore.

I know I have to read the basics about loading maps from my hard drive, creating character sheets, etc.

Anything else ?

Thanks.

Welcome!

well, posting here is an excellent start along with the reading. I can offer to do a discord session if you'd like to ask a few questions live. I have not messed with the FGU D&D classic (1e/2e) in a long time BUT I own a ton of the store bought items. I am mainly a player and the person that is responsible for helping the other players get up to speed on many things FGU.

So ask questions, be patient and don't get overwhelmed.

Welcome @nick28!

My recommendation is to not try to do everything at first - learn how to use the basics: sharing images/maps, character creation and basic character use, how to use an NPC, combat tracker and basic combat. FG has a lot you can do with automation, but sometimes new users get hungup on trying to automate everything and get frustrated trying to do that while learning the ins-and-outs of the application and the ruleset/s they're using. Get things setup and get playing - if you have to manually adjust things at first, that's fine.

Another good thing for the DM to do is run a second instance of FG and join as a player, especially when sharing maps - this will give you a good idea of what the players are seeing, which can be quite different from the DM side. See this Wiki page for how to open a second instance: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/2072641544/How+to+Open+Multiple+Instances+of+Fantasy+Grounds+ Unity

I'd also recommend loading up the "Tutorial 5E Campaign", even if you don't intend to use the D&D 5E ruleset. Once the campaign is loaded, from the right sidebar go to "Books" and then click on the "Campaign" button in the top left of the Books window that has just opened and then click on the Introduction heading.

If you get stuck, search in the Wiki - there's a lot of information in there, but can be hard to find; the search functionality in the Wiki works well, so use that a lot!

For 2E ruleset specific information I put together a module you can load and reference while in a campaign.

You can find it here: AD&D 2E Ruleset Documentation Reference Manual (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/1454/view)
