View Full Version : Mac Issues with Masking and Special Effects

I cannot seem to get either masking or special effects to work. At first I thought it was something I was doing wrong, so I hunted the forums and the videos. I was watching Zacchaeus' video here How to restrict environmental effects to one area of a map (UPDATED) (https://youtu.be/-R8iqpEQ2So) when I realized that effects aren't working either.

As you can see from the image, I have an FX layer, and have selected Myst as the component, but nothing is showing up on the map, even though, according to the video, the layer should be entirely made of mist.
I've also tried adding a global mask with the same result.

I don't know why this is happening. It's a fairly big map, but the image resolution is 1620x1260, so it's under the max size, as far as I know.
I am on a Mac. It's an M1 MacBook Air, with 16G of RAM, so hopefully that helps with figuring it out.

I can't tell from the screenshot, but you may have lighting enabled on the map. If lighting is enabled, some effects are only visible in lit areas. Try disabling lighting.

I have line of sight set up. And the entire map is supposed to be in darkness, with the players having their own light sources. Is that what you mean? I'm not sure how I enabled/disabled lighting.

Lighting is a separate toggle in the image data panel when you unlock an Image record. What is it set to? (On or Off)
Thanks,

If you mean here:
https://gyazo.com/9b503177a13a014924b123c8609f57c7. It's on. But even turning it off there's no noticeable change.
If you mean here:
https://gyazo.com/8611f8ff5367244937f92e022b2eaf42. It's off.
(I hope I'm looking in the right place. I'm still really new to FGU.)

It's unlocked. When I lock it, it automatically closes the side panel.

Sorry but we aren't talking about the panel being open or closed; we are talking about whether you have or have not enabled lighting on the map (see the highlights on my screenshot above). Can you please screen shot the entire map with the panel visible or at least screenshot the panel on the right (that is unlock the map and screenshot the portion on the right(.

Lighting is off. I apologize. I guess I misread somewhere.

In the screenshot posted, lighting IS enabled. Disable lighting by clicking on "Enable/Disable Lighting." It should be grayed out when lighting is disabled.

Well that's odd, because when I was looking-at it, I clicked it to try to figure out if it was on or off, and the map lit up when it was 'off' then... Lemme see if I can get a comparison shot to show you.

Okay, so I have a couple of questions, please?
1). Should lighting be enabled or disabled in order for masking/effects to work?
2). If lighting is enabled, then why does the map look darker when I turn it ON? (See the example image below, please)

1) Effects work with either lighting state. If lighting is enabled, and no lights are present, then the effects are not visible. I.e., they are only visible in areas that are lit.
2) The map looks darker with lighting enabled when no lights are present. When viewing as the GM, lighting and LOS are drawn partially visible so that the GM can still see areas of the map that are unlit. Enable the "player vision preview" to see what the map will look like to players (or press CMD+P). On a map with lighting enabled (but no lights) the map should appear black with player preview enabled.

If lighting is On, then is darker because you have no lights illuminating it. i.e. if you add a torch or similar then only that part of the map will be lit up, the rest will be in darkness. Cuase you know, you are asking FG to enable lighting effects.
If lighting is off, then it assumes you want the image to not have any lighting effects and akin to have full daylight everywhere.
Global Mask is independent of Lightning.
LOS is independent of Lighting.
If you are doing an outdoor map during daylight but you want trees and buildings etc to block LOS, then disable lighting and enable LOS.
If you are in a dungeon and only want the places that have torches or other light sources, or tokens with dark or true vision, then enable Lighting. And LOS so players can not see through walls.

What I'm trying to do is use lighting and line of sight so that the players have the tense experience of being in the dark and only seeing what their light sources reveal. This has been successfully accomplished and appears to be working rather well.
However, I'm also trying to enable masking because I'd like to be able to leave the map 'revealed' behind them, so they can remember where they've been.
I've also been exploring the use of effects; and I'm having difficulty understanding why neither form of masking is visible to me. I see no changes on the map and I see no effects at all.

If I understand what you want to achieve, FGU already does that if you have lightning and line of sight enabled: the players will keep seeing the areas they explored before in shades of gray, until you remove the tokens from the map. You shouldn't need any masking for it.

Global Mask will only hide. It will not "reveal" areas that lighting and LOS don't show.
But LOS and Lighting have a built in Fog Of War. This will show in a dimmed out manner what the PCs have previously seen. To see this, start a second instance of FG and connect to your game as a player.
