View Full Version : Freezing or Lagging

I have a unique or possibly niche problem. When I was in my DM's campaign a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that whenever they shared a battle map my computer would start to lag and freeze up a bit. My mouse would not move every few seconds and I it was a chore to move my token on the battle map. After our session I went into one of my campaigns and was getting the same thing. I tried doing updates, going through each individual module, etc. I then found that I was only getting the lagging and freezing while being in a discord call. I can have a battle map open and have the discord app up and running, but as soon as I join a call/channel I start to get the problem again.

So, I went through discord like I did with the fantasy grounds app and tried updating, turning things on/off, etc. but I am still getting the freezing and lagging. I even tried to run discord through my browser and was getting the same results. I have tried for weeks looking through forums trying to find anything similar to what I have going on, but I have not found anything outside of discord causing general lag where I am only getting lag when I have a FG battle map open.

TL;DR: While being in a discord call and having a FG battle map open, my PC lags and freezes like crazy.
If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it because I honestly don't know what to do at this point.

We've had two reports of glitched frames in video calls when a map is open in Fantasy Grounds and using video chat in Discord. Fantasy Grounds does periodic readbacks of data from the GPU and it is my suspicion that Discord is having a conflict with this. They are native asynchronous calls by the Unity engine and are not unique to Fantasy Grounds. This only the third report of an issue with Discord, so we haven't been able to identify any common cause. What webcam are you using?

I found this Reddit post (https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/wwxlyt/strange_relation_between_unity_and_discord/?rdt=49217) and it recommends turning off GPU acceleration in Discord. The symptoms are different, but could be related.

We don't do video at all, it is only voice channels/calls. Acceleration is off.

Interesting. Fantasy Grounds does very little audio, so I'm surprised that there would be any conflicts. Is there any in common with images causing issues, e.g., are there any animated WEBM assets on the map? Tokens, or background images?

Nothing special with the battle maps outside of LOS, walls, etc. I can open and look at images for items, characters and world maps without issue.

What size are the battle map assets in terms of resolution and file size?

Not sure on the map sizes as I am not the DM. We have tried just about every map type though from official ones from various modules to third party maps both with and without all the added flair such as LOS, walls, etc.

Do you know if your GM is running any extensions?

No idea. I am not running any extensions on any of my tables and still get the same results. I have also gone through each module I have individually.

You said you are not the DM. Only the DM can load extensions, and when they do they are loaded for all players. Besides extensions and map sizes, things that can impact performance is your network. Are you running wired or wireless? What is your bandwidth when you are having these issues? Are other devices on your network? If running wireless, how many other devices are on your wireless channel? (You can download a free smart phone app to tell you this).

I'm aware how the program works. I have a ultimate license and have ran my own campaigns. If you had read what I have written so far I get the same results no matter whose table I am on. I am wired into my network and the bandwidth is the same throughout all operations I have running.

There was a report from one other user this past week who was having issues when Discord was running and they found a solution. Details here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?84003-Discord-Flickering-Video-When-Viewing-Images&p=737025&viewfull=1#post737025

I've been using FG for 4 years and it's been slow at times and works perfectly fine at other times, but in the last month something has been getting to me during my sessions.
We play using Discord as a means of communication.
After 2 hours, Fantasy Ground consumes so much memory that the Discord audio starts to stutter. This makes it impossible to continue playing, so I have to restart it, losing about 15-20 minutes of my session just because of this. Is there any way to fix this, or anything I can do to reduce the amount of memory it consumes (approximately 12 GB)?

Please Compile Logs and attach them here.
Memory usage is usually caused by one of the following:
- a memory leak in FG, which is a bug and very unusual, but possible and why the logs are requested.
- a memory leak or circular references in an extension, also why we need the logs.
- large maps, are you using images over the recommended sizes? - poor connections with one or more clients, even one client with a poor connection can affect everyone during image or content sharing.
