Hi Folks,
I was just wondering when the 2024 MM will become available on FGU. I know brick & mortar stores are selling it, starting today (I have it in my hands right now). :) I'm guessing that it's not until the full street date of Feb 18 as it's not out on FGU now? Thanks in advance!

My bad. I pre-ordered this months ago and didn't realize it was on the store page. My apologies for wasting people's time! I appreciate the response. :)

When today should we expect it to be available?

Just now released. If you preordered it, just run an Update and it will install.
Enjoy!

So it is. Thank you.
Though I must say I'm disappointed to see that spellcasting NPCs no longer have the text of their spell descriptions included. That was a convenient feature.

Do you have an example? They should have all their spells listed under actions.

Mage and Archmage.
They have their spells listed, but not the spell descriptions.

I assume you are dropping them into the CT and then seeing this issue? Straight from the module they are just listed, same as before I assume.

I'm opening up FGU and clicking on NPCs, then opening an NPC.
If you look at spellcasting 2014 NPCs, they have spell descriptions at the bottom of their sheets. 2024 NPCs do not.

It looks like one of the last edits we made removed those. We should be able to re-add them and push an update.
The goal was to have them listed in the NPC stat block as well as within the CT.

So we are having an internal debate about this. As it was mentioned, dragging the NPC into the CT will auto-populate the spells. If you want to see them from the NPC record, you can right-click on the Spellcasting trait and choose Parse Spells and it will look up the latest versions as well and add them to the NPC record. The latter option is what we had originally before our last edit removed those entries.
There are pros and cons for each option of automatically including them.
Including them in advance creates a snapshot of what they were when the module was created. Any errata to the main spells would cause them to get out of sync.
Including them in advance shows them regardless of whether or not you have the PHB 2024.
These will be PHB 2024 versions, whereas parsing them yourself will allow you to choose either PHB 2014 or PHB 2024 depending on which of those modules you have loaded.
Do any of those considerations change your view of whether or not you would like them included?

Yes, thanks. I didn't know about the Parse Spells option. Between that and being auto-parsed in the CT, I should be all set.

However, I just tried Parse Spells on the 2024 Mage, with only the 2024 version of the PHB loaded It loaded the spells in semi-random order (small problem), but it loaded the 2014 versions (bigger problem).
(The same thing happens if I drag the Mage into the CT. I can tell by looking at Counterspell.)

You have to clear those out and make sure you only have the 2024 PHB loaded. It will pull the first version it finds across all modules. If the spells are in both modules, then it might pick up the wrong version.

Just a quick note that while activating the new MM in the Modules tab, I noticed that the old version doesn't have the "(Legacy)" tag like the 2014 DMG and PHB now have. It might avoid some future confusion to add that tag.

I've updated the 2014 version appending (Legacy) to the name. It should go live soon.

I verified that I only had the 2024 PHB loaded, then I reverted the NPC changes and exited and restarted FGU. The issue continued.
However, I did notice that some spells (such as Counterspell) were still showing in the Spells list from 3rd-party "Legacy" sources (e.g., the "Tomb of Annihilation Companion"). That's where "Parse Spells" was pulling them from; when i unloaded them, Parse Spells and the CT copy showed the 2024 spell versions.
Is there any way to get Parse Spells (and copying to the CT) to preferentially choose "2024" sources, even if Legacy sources are loaded?
Also: The 2024 spells appear to be loading sorted first by the number of times they can be cast per day, and then alphabetically within that. Could that be changed to either by level, or purely alphabetical?
Thanks.

While I'm asking: Is there any way to "re-parse" an existing Legacy NPC's spell list, using 2024 descriptions?

Sort of. If the module is not read-only, you can remove the spells (click edit, then delete all the spells), and then re-click on the Spellcasting trait again and re-parse.

We discussed this in our meeting today and we will be investigating it as a possibility.

RE: preferring 2024 spell sources...
Perhaps a better solution would to prefer sources based upon the campaign setting for legacy or 2024 rules default. That way legacy campaigns can continue to default to legacy spells.

I was thinking that we would set the preference based on the source of the NPC (i.e. 2024 or Legacy). I'm not sure if that would be better or worse than the Rules setting option.

I liked LordEntrails suggestion. Just pushed a hot fix to use the Rules Version setting to determine which spell records to default to when parsing NPCs.

Our the sound packs hooked up with the new Monster Manual?

The sound packs aren't hooked up to anything in particular. If you put an NPC onto the CT then FG will search to see if there are sounds for that monster name and add them to the sound board. It won't matter whether the NPC is from the 2014 Monster Manual, an adventure module, or the 2024 Monster Manual - as long as the name is still the same across all of that. So most of the 2024 Monsters will have sounds since their names haven't changed. Any new or renamed monsters however won't have sounds.
