Interior Shadows for Ambient Light?

I don't know if this is a technical issue or I'm simply doing this wrong.

I have set ambient light to dawn and adjusted the positioning - but the shadows are showing as if the position of the light is also inside the building, streaming out through the windows. (see image). I tried masking the interior, but that just made the inside of the building dark, without affecting the shadows from the windows.

You are doing it correctly. Once you add your Ambient light mask you#ll want to hide the inside of the building. Since you have made very long shadows you'll still get some shadow through the windows so you'll probably want to add a shadow occluder to the windows so that doesn't happen.
