View Full Version : Issues - Starting Cloud Server Mode

In the last week it seems like when starting a 5e campaign in Cloud Server Mode... maybe 1/3 of the time it just never starts loading.

Anyone else seeing this?

I've never had this issue with this campaign in 4 years running it.

LAN mode starts instantly every time.

Maybe the internet pipes to your house are frozen, because Wisconsin, and winter. :D

Heh. It's 36F here today... shorts weather...

I'm seeing no issues with any other applications/devices and speed test looks golden:

We did not see anything with our cloud game last night. But its certainly worth asking the question. I suspect their are logs the devs can look at if needed.

It's just when trying to start the session. I can cancel and retry and it will work within the next couple of tries... and sometimes it does just work right away.

I've been noticing this too. Sometimes the delay is long enough I cancel and retry.

I've experienced the same occasionally since switching to the cloud from LAN last year, but a cancel and restart (or two) usually works for me.

Yes... I can always get it to work... sometimes it takes a few cancel/retries.

Before the last week (or so)... it just ALWAYS worked.

More than likely, these are usually impacted by Internet traffic issues either reaching the FG lobby server or the service we use to do the connection brokering. Generally, these tend to be ephemeral, in as much as they are usually Internet traffic/delay scenarios. We'll definitely keep an eye out, but generally, there is not much information other than that a connection "didn't go through" or "timed out".

This is exactly what is happening to me. Before this week it never got stuck and now..stuck every time.

A reboot before my session got it to work last night but it's doing the same thing this morning. Definitely not normal.

EDIT: and I just tried again after this post and it worked..no reboot. Odd, but this is not how it has worked..ever.

Seconding this, started happening last week. It must be a SW server issue if it's been happening to multiple users all at the same time.

This is happening to me for the first time as well. Different computers and different ISPs = same issues

Same thing. I noticed it for the first time yesterday. Basically gets stuck and you have to cancel and retry.

Updated my FG this morning, and also having this issue. So far I'm on retry 5 for starting cloud server mode.

Since there are two threads I'll post my success story here -

Created a new 5e game, cloud-private, which launched fine.

Went back to my campaign and it launched successfully.

No need to update both threads. Let's just keep this one active since it is more recent.

Those interested can see the other thread here: Stuck on "Starting cloud server more" - Page 4 (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?57980-Stuck-on-quot-Starting-cloud-server-more-quot&p=735250#post735250)

I would like to add that I am running an older version of FGU (4.2.2 ULTIMATE; I haven't updated for extension compatibility reasons), so it isn't related to the software version. It must be a server issue.

Same thing, PF1e ruleset. Multiple times.

Logs spit out:
"[WARN] NETWORK: Noble Connect: Shutting down because of fatal error: Failed to connect to relay server"
"Fatal network engine error occurred [failed to connect to relay server]"

EDIT: Potentially related, switching to "private visibility" worked without a hitch

Happened to me too. Just keep pounding on it until a connection is established, however, players connecting are hit or miss.

For anyone who runs into this issue, please provide the logs when the hang occurs. If the connection takes more than a minute or so to start, then press the Logs button on the upper left of the launch screen, press the Compile Logs button, and post the logs here.

We work with a third party service to provide matchmaking and relay support; and I'm sure that they will want to see our logs to see what is happening.

Thanks,

Been happening to me for a week or so as well. Not sure if a coincidence but switching to private fixed the issue (again, might be anecdotal).

Logs attached.

Thanks for the logs; forwarded to the relay server developers.

"[WARN] NETWORK: Noble Connect: Shutting down because of fatal error: Failed to connect to relay server"
"Fatal network engine error occurred [failed to connect to relay server]"

We received this last night with several players running PF2, along with not being able to connect. Launched a 5E game and it connected just fine. Went back to PF2, could not connect.

About to call it a night when I tried launching the game locally, worked fine, then tried to connect to the cloud again and it worked. Was very weird. Had not launched this game in a month, so maybe some weird update is not working until you launch locally???

Thought I would toss this out there in case it helps.

Heard initial response matchmaking service saying that China had blocked some of the relay servers, which they addressed or worked around. I responded right away that we’re still having issues. More to come, once I hear.

Okay, just heard back again. After doing a full review of all the relay servers on their end around the world, they found a couple more that were mis-reporting their server health. They have reset those servers, and patched the monitoring.

Please let me know if still having issues.

We're also having the same issue: stuck on attempting resolved connection to server. We have people in various parts of the country, all on different computers, multiple IPs, all having the same issue. I'm in the same house and on the same network as the DM and can't connect. I've attached my logs on attempting to connect, with multiple attempts of me giving up and trying again.

This has been going on since December, and we've kept up with the updates. :(

We're not seeing this being reported as a general issue; so more that there is something blocking the connections outgoing from the machine. Looking at the logs, all the attempts by the networking library we use are getting "Host Unreachable" messages for all possible routes (local IP, external IP, Relayed, etc.) Given that we haven't changed any of the networking connect for a couple years, my guess is that a recent update caused security software on your machine to block connections; or a change on your home network is keeping the two machines from talking to each other.

* Can you make sure that your firewall is allowing FantasyGrounds.exe to access the network, and is not being blocked? (i.e. Windows Defender)
* Can you make sure that the two machines are connected to the same network router? (i.e. same network subnet)

We did try it with me removing the firewall entirely for a bit, and was still receiving the same error message and not able to connect at all. DM never even saw any attempts on his side. He is on PC, I'm on Mac. I've been able to successfully connect to another game with no issues. It's just been this Tuesday night game that's had issues. I do not have any virus protection/malware protection running on my Mac.

I did remove the ETH cable from my computer and connected to the WiFi, which is how the DM's PC is connected. That finally enabled me to connect to the table. As a side note, my computer has been hardwired to the same WiFi signal for at least a year with no issues. /shrug

We still have other players, a mix of PC and Mac on different ISPs that are all having connection issues, just none like I had tonight.

Thanks for the quick response.

That implies to me that the ethernet and wifi are on different subnets within your home network setup; or something in between the two machines is blocking the connection when connected in that way. Not sure when/how that would have changed on your network setup; but updates are happening to hardware/software all the time outside of FG too.

Glad you got it to work with the wifi.

Note: turning off a firewall on a Windows PC doesn't "quite" turn the firewall off, not sure if it's the same on a MAC or not. Try finding the whitelist section for Fantasy Grounds and remove it and then let the machine rebuild the permissions when FG runs again.

There used to be issues when people in apartments had a router, and then the building itself had a router making a double NAT issue. But I haven't heard any problems since the cloud brokering went in But you could try a VPN to bypass any local network issues.

Well I can attest that I have a very beefy rig for fantasy grounds (64 gig ram 14900k cpu ram is ddr5 i use NVME m2 for my storage etc etc) and my internet is 1.2 gigs though it often only hits 990 - 1100 , upload is slow only 50 meg but figure that still should be plenty for fg…

Anyway in a game i run Fridays and a game i play in on Saturdays we’ve notice wonky performance in fgu - cant select targets without effort slow and weird loading issues , tokens freezing up when trying to move them, though part of that was an extension.

Compared to times past the system as a whole just performed better.

Friday is my next game I’m hoping it’s better than last week. Though it wasn’t unbearable.

My players are having issues getting in as well. It just keeps telling them "attempting to resolve connection"

What have you done from the suggestions in this thread to try and resolve it? Can you attach logs from the host and a player? Is it all players or just some? What are their physical locations? Have you tried with and with out VPNs?
