View Full Version : Dynamic Lighting, Incorrect LOS

I've noticed that the 'terrain' los type for walls is acting like a pit, rather than terrain. Seems to work correctly when the token is outside the bounds of the wall, but when it's inside, the token owner can't see anything outside it.

As far as I can remember, it has always worked like this.
And yes, I always imagined that the LoS of the terrain type should work like this.
If the token is outside, it blocks vision, but does not prevent you from crossing it.
If the token is inside, you can see everything around you.
Well, I always imagined that this type of LoS would serve to represent higher levels.
For example, a wall that I can climb...
It prevents me from seeing beyond, but if I climb it, I can get over it and, since in theory I would be at a higher level, I would be able to see everything without being seen by those on the lower level.

You should be able to see out of terrain and into it, but not through it.
Pretty sure this has been reported as an issue in 4.6 and is on the list to fix. But, one of the FG devs should be along within a few days (it's a holiday in the US for those not aware) and should confirm.

Does anyone know if there is a detailed video showing all types of LoS?

Try the "How do I ??? in Unity" thread here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?55797-How-do-I-in-Unity

Edit: actually -
You probably want videos: 29, 30, 31

My humble opinion on how the different types of Line of Sight should work:

Wall: A wall that prevents the character from proceeding, or is a barrier.
Terrain: In this case, it would serve to see the object but not through it (being outside of it), e.g.: The trunk of a tree.
Terrain˛: In this case, it would also serve to see the object, but inside it you would not be seen by those on the outside, but you could see those on the outside. e.g.: A roof or platform.
Door: A simple door that may or may not be locked (key or break-in test) that allows access to a place.
Secret passage: A wall that opens and closes.
Window: A wall that allows you to see through it. e.g.: The window of a store.
Window˛: A wall that allows you to see through it and that can be opened to pass through it. e.g.: A window in a room.
Illusory Wall: Something that prevents you from seeing through it but that, if found, allows you to go to another place. Ex: The Wardrobe of Narnia.
Pit: It could be a trapdoor that opens and makes the character fall and get stuck.
Pit˛: It could be a place with quicksand that prevents movement.
Pitł: It could be a pool that allows you to enter and exit it.
Shadow: It serves to see and pass through the object, but it affects the lighting. Ex: A pasture fence.

Of course, these are my guesses, and I don't know how much work it would be to make this work.

The trunk of a tree is a wall basically.

Windows can already be set to see through, and either block movement or be openable like doors. Pits can already trap the user by disabling movement out of it. You can set pits to block or not block movement or visibility. Experiment with the optional buttons on the bottom left of the pit and windows tools to see what each of them do.

Illusory walls work as you say above. They cannot be seen through but do not block movement through them.

When I mentioned the tree trunk, I was thinking more about the possibility of someone wanting to climb it.

If it worked as I envisioned,

I would use LoS Terrain for the trunk and LoS Shadow for the canopy (the part of the branches with the leaves).

But of course that's just me with my overactive imagination... LUL

We just pushed a hot fix update that adjusts the terrain/pit LoS behaviors. Please run a new Check for Updates, and let us know if still not working.

Pits should block LoS/movement once entered; and terrain should be able to be seen into, but not through.

Terrain working as expected now.
