View Full Version : another 4.6 bug - ASSETS

I've tested this and it's reproduceable as of ten minutes ago. When I go into assets, and then a specific folder (wanting to add another map to images), my machine's memory spikes quickly to 99% and of course everything grinds to a halt. Actually after letting it sit there for a minute my machine actually crashed hard...uggh. I'm testing right now to see if just having a map up causes a problem, but so far, it seems like that is ok (from a memory perspective).
I've not gone down the path of turning off extensions or anything yet, but if no one else is experiencing this, then let me know and I can try to do more debugging.

There have been reports of memory leaks (see other posts in this forum). The devs might want to see your campaign folder, but certainly test without extensions and if you can reliably reproduce the issue report back with the steps needed.

I just pushed a hot fix about an hour ago that should help with that.
Can you please run a new Check for Updates, and let us know if you are still seeing issue?
If still an issue, we'll probably need more information on how to track down what would cause it in your setup.
Thanks,

Same issue - updated FGU tonight with latest update - running Castles and Crusades campaign - turned off all extensions. Opening assets makes the program freeze, can't move the asset window, cannot close it, cannot open any other menu items closing the program stalls and gives you the blue spinning circle and then the program goes grey and indicates its sending a report to microsoft or something like that.

You and your players can use Settings->Advanced to roll back to the Prev version if it's blocking your game. We did push a couple updates this evening to help with some other memory leak issues related to Image records that may have helped.
At this point, there must be something specific in the Assets that you have imported or using in FG that is causing the issue. Can you provide a zipped up copy of your campaign folder as well as the images and tokens subfolders of the FG data folder? I'm guessing you have a fair amount, so you'll probably need to use DropBox or OneDrive to share a link. If that's not the case, we'll have to look at the content you've purchased to see what might be happening.

In my case, I experienced the following issues on tuesday night, right after the update:
- The thumbnails of my asset images appeared as a white square. Even the thumbnails of the folders were displayed like this. When I tried to open the image, I sometimes managed to see it.
- On my maps, the painted images were not visible (I had drawn doors). I could only see the map in the background. At some point they reappeared, but when interacting with those images, they disappeared from the map again.
- If I searched for an image of my assets to paint something new, it would eventually disappear from the map.
and the program was very slow and quite unresponsive. I saw the animated water freezing for half a second every two seconds. It kicked my players several times. Eventually it kicked me too.

@Makgnus,
Thanks for reporting. The white squares issue should have been addressed by the hot fix earlier today. I'll ask Carl to double-check the other items as well.
Please run a new Check for Updates when you get a chance; and see if you're still experiencing the same issues.

Some additional detail. 4.6 was working fine on the 19th and 20th. An hour prior to my game on 11/20 I imported 1 new image - I opened assets in FGU, clicked the folder and pasted in a new image into the campaign image folder. Once I hit the asset refresh and did a search for the image the issues with lag and bad response happened.
Prior to that it was working fine.

On the 21 y returned to the 4.6.0 version (had to go back to the Prev version) to test it again.
It seemed to work fine at first. I managed to see all assets and the doors painted on the map. I proceded to paint one more door and make changes to the map.
I had to go away for maybe 10 minutes or more. When I returned, the program was not responding and I saw an usage of 90% of my RAM. Had to force close the application.
I ran Fantasy grounds again on 4.6.0 with no extensions, it started ok, I could see the assets, but in a few minutes memmory was 98% used (or 16 GB RAM). So before it crashed, I just closed it and returned to the Prev version.

Two images attached - the image I imported which was a map picture from Dungeon Alchemist and an image of CPU / RAM usage after I launched - CPU ran at 90% and RAM ticked up to 9 GB and the program would not quit.

I'm not overly experienced with Fantasy Grounds, but the issue is definitely still there even after the latest update.
I've been playing with a new 5e campaign, only extension I have loaded is the WindowSaver extension. Have the 2024 PHB/DMG, 2014 MM as well as the Free Rules and SRD Bestiary modules loaded.
Anytime I open the Assets window to change a token/image on an NPC its a quick downward spiral to FGU completely locking up. I do own most of the 5e Adventures/Campaigns and several Solo modules that it appears to be trying to pull assets from.

ok - Just was able to test again right now, with current patches. I went into FGU and the first thing I did was click Assets. The main window came up fine. No memory issues and I let it sit there for a minute. Then I clicked on the first bag called "Campaign". The next window came up starting to display some maps etc but while that was happening, memory went up to 99% within 5 seconds. Game and laptop locked up and I had to force a restart. In my Campaign Assets bag I have probably 15(?) things...various maps and portraits etc.
One of my maps is huge in size FYI, but prior to 4.6 it was never a problem.

Thanks all. I was able to recreate one scenario with some local data that I'm having Carl look at.
I may reach out again to get specific files; especially the large ones like @packerfanjeff63 mentioned.

I just tested FGU this morning, and the "assets" bug I reported has been fixed for me. Memory usage went up some (as expected) but FGU kept humming along.
I consider my issue resolved.
Thanks

Updated this afternoon. Tested with C&C ruleset and all is good with opening up the asset menu - the program is responsive and does not freeze up. A big thanks to the team for tracking down this issue and sending out a fix.

@Makgnus,
We have pushed multiple fixes over the last few days, including many for painting layers. Can you confirm whether you are still seeing the missing paint layer issues?
Thanks,

I apologize in advance for not being more computer savvy with the lingo. I have been having problems since the Tuesday update. I ran a four hour game with 7 players on Monday opening several maps at once and it ran fine, even with Youtube and Discord going. Since the update the computer comes to a grinding halt with just one map open and nothing else. If I open two maps then the lag increases to about a minute or so. Any more then that and the computer crashes and boots me out of fantasy grounds. Are there still fixes coming for this issue?

SmiteWorks has pushed multiple fixes over the last couple days addressing this and a few other issues. When did you last update? Have you tested in a new campaign without any extensions with the latest build?

I have updated twice today and it is is not currently saying there are any new updates available. I just started a new campaign with zero extensions and having even one map open is slowing it noticeably. I am using Linux Mint if that matters. It was working fine on Monday. I can try to generate a log and upload the campaign if that would be useful. I am willing to try to help, just let me know what and how. Thank you.

@Sombraveloz, @Justanevildm,
We just pushed a hot fix release (in the last half hour) that should help with maps that exceed the recommended sizes (>4Kx4K). Please run a new Check for Updates on the Live channel, and let us know if you're still seeing an issue.

Thanks so much for the effort, i see some improvement, since at least i can preview the map in before i click to create map record, but once i click in create map record, it doesn't work correctly. But is still far from being stable as in version 4.5.10 where i was able to play bigs maps without issue.

I am trying to roll back to the version 4.5.10 but it seems the installer loads directly now to the 4.6 version :-(

Can you provide a copy of one of these maps?
Also, regarding large maps: in v4.5.10 map sizes were restricted to the maximum size supported by the GPU which is typically 16384px x 16384px for modern GPUs. and images above that were resized. The image resize was inadvertently disabled in v4.6.0. It has now been enabled so the image behavior is the same between v4.5.10 and v4.6.0. If you have images larger than that, they will be resized when loaded.

Thanks for the files. I'm not having any more trouble loading the maps provided in 4.6.0 than in 4.5.10. I have uncovered some memory issues using that map that I am looking into now. That may be what you are experiencing.

Maybe this helps:
If you try to open a new client of FG and JOIN the game in your computer and share the map, the map is not loading for the player client. Where in 4.5.10 is sharing without problem.
Previous to the hot fix was not loading.
My normal setup for the game is 2 clients one as a player and one as dm, i share the game in a TV flat on the table.

Thanks for the extra information. I am able to connect as a client and load the map, however I am still investigating some memory issues.
As general performance question, why are there so many lights on this map?

the map is created automatically using the Dungeons Alchemist export function. I do use DA often and i create my own there and then export. They were working without problem so far, though I get they are probably not optimize performance wise.

I have only used one map from there so far and it was really laggy. Although, that may be my machine more than FG. My machine is about 5 years old and was only mid-grade then (was usually a little better than the minimum requirement for most games I get), lol
