View Full Version : PLEASE help - 'Display' button missing from 'Actions tab

hey there,

a few of us have been using the 'Display' button to toggle text fields that we can keep up that are next to our Actions / Bonus Actions / Spells, etc. that have a shorthand for that item / effect / spell. like area of effect, duration, distance, effects, notes, etc so that we can keep combat rolling by being able to glance at what all they do.

it used to be here when you were on the 'Actions' tab of your character and there was also a magnifying glass:

62543

but ever since an update recently - the button and magnifying glass are missing and we can't access or view all our meticulously written notes during play anymore:

62544

does anyone know how to get it back or what the deal is? it was VERY handy to use so that we didn't have to click each thing to read about it if it wasn't memorized.

Change mode back to preparation?

Mode doesn't impact it. I don't know if it was intentionally removed or not. But it is certainly gone in a new 5E campaign with no extensions.

do either of you talk to the devs? Are you the devs?

it was so nice having all that blank space taken up with shorthand notes. It really helped out during gameplay.

I think this may be what you need

I don’t have a chance to try that yet but that may be just what we need. Glad to see there was another thread on this issue. It was indeed the ‘Display: Summary’ that we are missing.

used to be able to fill the fields out. I found a picture that shows the fields. Even though these say ‘Display: Group’’, when you chose ‘Display: Summary’ you could just type in those boxes like a little note box and it was super helpful to glance at during gameplay.

THANK YOU @jrowsey1. i will look into that. if anyone else has a solution or can get this re-implemented – that would be great. Some of us do actually use it.

It was rarely used; and created another set of display options that confused people (due to the double cycling (combat-preparation-standard; notes-actions-group)

Now, you can edit the group of the power by using the Edit button; and the actions are always available (never hidden). I found that most people just append quick abbreviations to the spell names to provide more detail for the spells.

This is only the second request I've seen for those notes in the three months since changed. I created a small extension that should work to enable the notes for the short term that you can use to move them around.

thank you, JPG. i will have our group use the extension.

what do you mean by ‘for the short term’? will the extension break eventually?

will the extension break eventually?
Yes. Eventually things will change enough or that space will be used for something else and there will be a conflict.

It's meant to allow you guys to pull the data; and add abbrev notes to the name.

You can add me as the third request! I have been trying to figure out where the display button went and finally came to the forum to look for the answer. I used that feature a lot to help track my 5E spells for things like ritual, concentration, and free preparation. I have been missing that feature a lot for my druid. I will try that extension to retrieve my notes and look for another way to track my spells.

my DM finally got back to town and i was able to try this out last night. IT WORKED!! THANK YOU!!!

PLEASE, Moon Wizard/JPG, don't get rid of the ability for this extension to work any time soon. if you HAVE to - please at least extend the spell name boxes all the way to the right so we have enough room to write our 'at a glance' notes. it would be extremely helpful for some of us.

There are no plans to break it, but as LordEntrails mentioned, we don’t have plans to maintain long term either. Because the 5E rulebooks don’t provide any official spell notes from the publisher, it was a field unused by almost everyone.

I think the better question is what kind of at a glance notes are needed to do what you guys are using it for now. Examples are very helpful.

yeah - that’s why i put some screenshots on there so you could see what we’re using that space for.

thanks for everything (helping, responding, taking a note field in the consideration for future builds, etc).

I came from the 3.5 world and started playing 5E about a year ago. I needed a place to help me keep up with what is a concentration spell, what spell I get a free prepare in from a druid ability, and so forth. Here is one of my screenshots:

Given that the Core books do not provide spell notes, and those ended up just showing as a wall of blank fields for most people; there is not a plan to add those to the core ruleset features at this point.

For my games, I just have players add note tags to the name of the spell to, such as [C] for concentration spells, [T] for touch spells, [R:#] for spell ranges, etc.

I provided a sample extension of how to enable as well earlier in the thread:
