It may be too much to ask, but could you change the notes section on the Notes tab (or create a new tab) that acts like a Story so that links to other stories, NPCs, etc can be attached directly to the character sheet?

You could create an item, feat, feature, or trait and put it in there if you want. You can link things to any of those things and the links will work as long as you also share whatever the link points to as well. It would be much easier however to just create a story entry and share that with the players. Remember players can't create stories themselves but they can create notes which they could link to any of the above.

I believe the request is to change the notes field in the PC sheet to a formatted text field, so that links to other records can be added if desired.

I agree this would be better. It cant be changed without losing all the existing notes on existing characters though.

I've considered something like the action tab for a notes system that you can organize yourself and the record itself contains formatted text field. I think for those that like making notes, it give them the best way of maintaining notes. I did this in World of Darkness 5e. Haven't gotten much feedback with this approach.

Mad Nomad has his Journal extension, but it doesn't work with Shadowdark. He is looking for help to make his extensions work with other rulesets. I figured any notes already in that Notes section would probably be overwritten. I suppose the best way to do it is as a new tab. There is another extension, Scribe, that changes one of the 5E CS tabs to add a Story like field that can be formatted and everything.
Another add-on that would be cool is something like Friend Zone for characters with familiars or the Beastmaster class Beast Shape talent from Unnatural Selection.
Another add-on that can be combined with NPC hirelings and pack animals would be something like KitNKaboodle where it adds an inventory and actions tab to NPCs. Although, Bayne's Bag of Holding extension takes care of the inventory issue for pack animals.

I knew I had done a workaround with another player but forgot I did that. Thank you for the reminder, lol. Although, now that I'm thinking about it, it may be better to just have the player use the Investigator notes available though World Builder extension.

Like a list where you can create individual story entries or one big story entry?

Just a formatted text field and then you can put anything you want in it.

This would be best, but beggars can't be choosers, lol. I also left a post on the Cohorts extension to see if he could add it to Shadowdark, so he may be contacting you ion regards to that. I offered to gift the ruleset to him since he does not currently have it, lol.

More interesting than a specific set of rules would be the formatted text capability in Core RPG, which is in theory the basis of everything.

You are basically taking the sidebar notes and put it on the character sheet.
Why is this better than using notes which any player can access?

Currently the notes field in the PC sheet is a plain text string control. The request is to change this to a formatted text control (or add another field that is a formatted text control). This will allow adding links to the PC sheet note field, and doing other formatted text that would make PC notes data more flexible than a string control. I don't think the ask is to add the sidebar notes to a PC sheet.

Yeah my point was you can do those things with sidebar notes.

PC "notes" (stuff to do with the PC - links to deities, spells, other things, etc.) should be within the PC sheet, not within campaign notes, as they are specific to the PC. If a PC is exported from a campaign they need to have all of their details with that PC - that can't be done with campaign "notes".
For example, in the PF2 ruleset there is a plain text field for PC notes (this remains plain text for backwards compatibility), there are additional "notes: fields that are formatted text that allow adding in links etc. within the PC.

This was my test approach with World of Darkness and hoping it gets adopted in other rulesets.

Like I said it's basically the action tab but for notes lol

I think that it a bit cleaner with individual records.
