View Full Version : Open URL does nothing!

I know this is probably a super simple issue but I can't find anything on why this isn't working.
Whenever a URL tries to open; it will make the pop-up appear "The following URL has been requested to be opened. Do you want to allow?" but when hitting Yes, nothing happens. And if I hit Yes To All, then the pop up just doesn't appear anymore, and still nothing happens at all.
Very confused as to why this is happening.

When the openURL API is called in FG, it calls the Unity openURL API which in turn calls your OS handling of URLs. It sounds like something is not set up in the OS to support the URL calls.
Which OS and browser are you using? Do you have any security programs which may block applications from opening URLs?

I'm on Windows 10 using Firefox. I do have a few extensions like Malwarebytes and UBlock Origin in firefox that would have to do with security or things popping up, if that makes a difference.

It may. Like I was mentioning; FG hands off to a Unity game engine API, which calls the native OS handling.
Are all URLs being affected; or only certain ones? (i.e. type https://www.google.com in the chat box and try clicking on the link created for a very basic check)

It seems that all links are being affected as even that link does not open when I hit Yes

Then, something is blocking URLs from opening on your machine. Basically, the Unity game engine is asking Windows 10 to open a URL using HTTPS protocol, and then it's completely handed off to Windows to handle. In Windows 11, you can see this configuration under Settings->Apps->Default apps->Choose defaults by link type.

This is super weird.. Your explanation makes perfect sense, so I checked the settings and yes, HTTPS protocol is opened with Firefox. So I thought maybe one of my settings was blocking it.
I turned off UBlock Origin
I turned off Malwarebytes
I even went into Firefox's settings and turned off any kind of security against pop-ups or add-ons
And still, it doesn't seem to work.
I then tried to change the HTTPS open protocol to Microsoft Edge, which is completely default since I never use it. and it *still* won't open anything.

It is probably something that has been set in Windows Defender / Advanced Firewall

As far as I can tell I have no restrictions in my firewall for Fantasy Grounds

Whenever you install/first-launch a program that uses the network Windows pops up a dialogue asking you to set/allow permissions. Sometimes when this happens and you are in the middle of doing things a default option of block gets applied.

Seriously so confused and frustrated...
I decided to fully disable everything I could think of, restart my computer, and just open Fantasy Grounds and create a new test game to see absolute defaults.
No Firewall, Firefox anti pop-up or extensions totally disabled, default HTTPS protocol is Firefox,
On a brand new game I sent a google link, and when I tried to open it, nothing happened.
I really can't think of anything else..

Sometimes changes don't take effect until a reboot when it comes to networking. I have pulled my hair out for a long time before realizing that I missed a simple reboot, and my changes actually took effect.

I disabled everything I could think of. Turned off my firewall. Turned off Malwarebytes. Switched the HTTPS protocol to a default browser i haven't adjusted at all.
I restarted my computer to register all the changes. Started up a brand new Campaign with no extensions or setting changes.

Digging even deeper into this, it seems like even the buttons on the main menu that open links don't work for me like the Quickstart Guide, user Manual, even DLC Store. I seriously have no clue what could be causing this
Even weirder, I decided to try to replicate the issue in another program, Tabletop Simulator which I believe also runs in Unity, and all of their web URLs open without any issue even with all of my security settings running again. So it's exlcusive to Fantasy Grounds Unity, somehow.

Did you try to redo the firewall permissions and reboot prior to trying a link? Disabling the firewall may not take effect or apply until the reboot. Also, check your settings and security details in your browser? Have you tried to use a different, third browser yet? Also, did you reinstall the Fantasy Grounds VTT app, as sometimes the install or updates can get corrupted.

Generally, disabling a firewall does not modify old firewall settings for security reasons (most firewalls view being turned off as an attack or potential attack). You are better off turning on the firewall and adding exceptions for FG - which I know is a PITA - but you problems are likely caused by some sort of security program or OS setting.
