View Full Version : Game Systems People Would Like To See Ported?

Mulsiphix
April 18th, 2008, 05:13
I'm pretty new to pen and paper gaming. I'm a long time BattleTech player but have little experience with anything else. I have a few questions for FG regulars. Is there a list of what rule sets have already been ported/created for FGII?
In theory, not taking real world copyright issues into consideration, what game system(s) would you like to play in Fantasy Grounds II if you had the chance?
Has any information been released on what rulesets/systems are planned for official development for FGII? I know D&D/D20, Savage Worlds, and Castles & Crusades rulesets are supported already.Any feedback would be most appreciated.

Digital Adventures (www.digitaladventures.net) have been the main suppliers of official rulesets, and two of the ones currently in development are Call of Cthulhu (Chaosium d100 version) and Rolemaster (Classic version).

There is also another thread here (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6645) with a list of community activity, although it is a little old now.

I'd really like to see Alternity ported to an FGII ruleset but I don't think a licensed product is going to happen. Shame, I like the system but only rarely stumble across other "fans". The Spacemaster rpg that ICE published a few years back was also nice.

Many thanks Foen for answering questions one and three. So all that remains is question two. I'd love to hear from some other users. Thanks to scytale2 and Stuart for sharing their wish lists :)

thread necromancy i know.....

I know Castles & Crusades and somewhat like AD&D 2nd Ed. But I would love to see a honest to god translation for FG2.

I got a somewhat broken one for FG though.

My wish list for the future beyond RMC would have to include HERO as it's the dogs :D

I'd have to second the call for HERO and the Fuzion rules that came partly from HERO. Already sent an email to HERO hoping they contact Digital Adventures. Not sure who holds the rights to Fuzion right now.

Oo when did you send that e-mail, because I kinda did the same thing at the weekend about HERO in general and whether they were looking at approaching VTT's now WotC were preparing DDI.

Of course I mentioned the excellent work both Smiteworks and DA were doing

Think he means C&C is like 2nd Edn but he would like a true FG2 version of 2nd Edn THAC0 and all *thinks about his 2nd Edn books and has no inclination to read them*

Nice plug though Thore :D

Yeah, this is exactly what I mean.

I took a chance and purchased C&C this morning, and already, they dont want to play it because it isnt true 2nd Edition AD&D. They might have to learn a new rule system and they dont like change. Dunno what to do besides code it myself, but I have no idea how.

Well you're the DM and from previous posts I assume they all have clients so

Q: Having read the system do you like C&C (although you'd have had to be quick from this morning)?

If so drop them an ultimatum of "Guys I'm running the game using C&C, it's not gonna cost you a thing so either run with it or one of you guys can DM something for me to play in and I'll start a game on the FG boards so I can run C&C and continue my campaign"

You're putting the work in so you decide to do it how you want, take back the power. If they get angsty run one more game and take pleasure in TPKing them.

Friends or not I won't let players jerk me around :)

OR there's that generic ruleset where everything is typed into the sheet which may help and be less combative :)

I vote TPK though :p

Personally I'd find some new friends :p

Seriously though if they really do not want to know it's their loss, my take would be:

"Right then I've bought C&C, this is the next game I'm running".

One of two things will happen:

1) they all refuse to play (everybody loses)
2) they play and realise that C&C is very close to Classic D&D

if #1 occurs then as a last resort "Right then I am not going to code a 2nd Edition ruleset, so one of you will have to!

Oh and the first step is you willl need to buy a full license (if they have lite) and there is no upgrade option"

Sent an email on the 6th to Steve Long and got a quick reply. He seemed ok with creating content for FG. He liked the podcast link I attached, a talk with Kevin Melka. Highly recommend. https://www.thegamesthething.com/

Forwarded the email to Thore at DA. Hope it happens.

I have. Ive checked back in here and at 4UM periodically over the past couple years to look for it. The story is always the same...theres a lot of interest, some project or other always gets "started", but in the end nothing ever comes of it. Or at least, no fruits of the project ever get posted anywhere.

I would do it myself, but while I understand the graphical (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7276) end of FG to an acceptable degree, I don't find this aspect of FG accessible enough for the non XML inclined...and I literally don't have time to learn such a broad skillset for such a one-off project.

Honestly, now that Hero Lab (https://www.wolflair.com/index.php?context=hero_lab) has a M&M ruleset and some handy GM tools like a Combat tracker, I dont need it from the GM point of view so much...but it would be nice to have some sort of non-generic char sheet in FG itself for internal reference.

I'm pretty sure that there was an M&M campaign going on earlier this year (I think they were using a d20-based M&M ruleset), and the campaign was being published in the Legends guild forums (www.legendsguild.co.uk).

Sorry to pour water on your flames, but the underlying FG2 engine only supports square grids not hex. So GURPS is doable, but not with a hex grid.

Foen

So it would involve Smiteworks getting involved and perhaps having GURPS as the generic ruleset (along with hex grid) AND an advanced 3.5 ruleset. Now that you put it that way Foen how can I disagree :D

Note: Hero > GURPS :p

Oberoten

Maybe a hex-grid option for 2.1? And scriptable tokens?

Griogre
June 26th, 2008, 18:05
Given their snap to grid feature right now, I think "staggered" squares (hex substitute for any that don't know) would be a viable option for 2.0.

I'd like to see DA do a G.U.R.P.S. ruleset. With hex grid and all. I'd buy that.I've developed a working GURPS 4e ruleset, with PC & NPC character sheets and a combat tracker; I'll be putting it up for download quite soon over on FUM.

I believe Steve Jackson games are pretty protective of their IP and probably wouldn't allow it. Kevin from DA may have even approached them at one point..The SJG online policy is clear that character sheets are fine, and that play across an online chat system is also OK, as long as there is no automation of the rules. I've kept all automation and rules material out of the GURPS ruleset (other than that normally found on the character sheet). I've run several full sessions with it now, and you really don't miss automatic rolling of skill checks, etc. FG2 provides you with hotkey slots, so you can set up your maneuver texts and damage rolls yourself, and everything else is pretty much roll 3d6 against the target.

I've also developed a filter for GURPS Character Assistant that allows you to export your PCs and load them into FG.

It would be great if SJG franchised a full ruleset, with automation and the Basic Set books in the library - I'd buy that too - but in the meantime my version should let us all play online quite happily.

Sorry to pour water on your flames, but the underlying FG2 engine only supports square grids not hex. So GURPS is doable, but not with a hex grid.Hopefully SmiteWorks will give us hex grids and token facings in a future update, but in the meantime all this really means is that you have to add the hex grid to the map when you draw it and use tokens that have a clear facing when you rotate them.

If anyone wants to get their hands on the GURPS ruleset immediately, and to give me some feeback while I do the last few tweaks to get the release version ready, come on over to the GURPS group on FUM, and PM me there (I might not see the PM for a while here).

There was a nice True20 set out there that I'm using, but it uses a revised damage system - - I'd gladly pay generously for a True20 rule set that uses the basic stuff from the books (standard damage track system), and adds the double-click-to-roll mechanic from the JPG 3.5 set.

I totally back this one up. Ok, this is a bit of an old thread but only just read it. I'd like to see the following two systems in FGII:

Harnmaster
Deadlands

The former was put together as an FGI ruleset, but it didn't get ported to FGII (can anyone tell me how different they are?). I've just got a copy of the FGI version to have a play with and see if I can do anything with it. I'm a big fan of the system and the Harn world which goes with it.

Deadlands is a GREAT system to play in, but the usage of poker chips in the game may be a little tricky. Actually, could easily be tracked on a character sheet but would be superb if animated (tossing the chips like rolling the dice! :D ).

Cheers,
Z

I know that you had already talk about it. But a kind of Runequest ruleset would be more than welcome!! Maybe because of license and this kind of things a ruleset based on the OGL system of Runequest would be easier to build.

The MERP version of Rolemaster is almost certainly not a possibility due to ICE's license position ... besides ... way more critical tables in Rolemaster *and* the automation in the ruleset being developed takes out all the maths and makes combat (under limited play tests so far) only marginally slower than 3.5.

I started a RuneQuest (OGL version) ruleset a way back, but have been consumed in other things. It is on my list of things to develop, but you can see what I was doing in my Anatomy of a ruleset (https://wiki.witheredlands.co.uk/anatomy.ashx) tutorial, which was not finished because I didn't finish the ruleset!

Hey guys,

you have been "almost" done with this rule set for "almost" a year now looking back at posts here and the ice blog.

Any idea when "almost" might turn into "completely"?

I have cash money (and credit cards too) in my wallet burning a hole in my pocket waiting to order a few licenses of the rolemaster rule set for my play group as soon as you start shipping.

So do me a favor, finalize it and take my money off my hands

Hehe, the final stages are in hand, with a GenCon backstop date. The ICE folks are about to undertake *their* play testing, and there a few small tweaks, then we're done.

BTW you only need one ruleset licence to play with a whole group - the GM needs it installed on his/her machine then everyone else gets to use it for free.
