I just thought I'd post this so to help. This is what worked for us.

Both one of my players and I are behind a very strict firewall which we can't control (a university firewall).
Therefore to be able to play through Fantasy Grounds we use a program called Hamachi (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp).

We downloaded the program and installed it. When asked to disable unsecure windows processes we chose not to and when asked to run the free version or the premium version we chose the free version.
Then we restarted our computers.
In order to create a hamachi id (which is the first thing the hamachi program does when the power on button is pressed) the program must be allowed to bypass the firewall. Hamachi has a wiki (https://logmeinwiki.com/wiki/Category:Firewall) which shows how to do this one some firewalls.

When the id is successfully created the numbers at the top of the hamachi window change from 0.0.0.0 to 5.x.x.x (where the x's are in place of your unique id). One of us then creates a network (in our case the GM) by clicking the triangle button. Some name and passwords are chosen and given to the rest of the group via email, IM or Skype.
All the others then connect to the network via hamachi.
The GM then hosted a FG game on port 80 and the players connected to the GM's hamachi ip.

One of the players was continually disconnected from the network when the connection to FG was established. The player would be connected for a minute or two and then disconnected. Changeing the hamachi from a NAT connection to a connection using the internet browser settings changed this and improved the connection. (To change the connection go to Hamachi and press the button with the gear on it. Then select "Preferences". Under the Status screen choose "Detailed configuration" under the Connection heading. Uncheck the boxes under the NAT connection and select the radio-button with the "Use Internet Browser settings".)

Thanks go to the great advice on the boards.

This is a very nice tutorial for a program that many users might need. Beautifully done. I wish there was more material like this on the site.

Might be a good idea to make this a sticky!

I also had a really hard time running FG until I used Hamachi, and that made it run perfectly.
