View Full Version : Image Sharing Options

I'm wondering what my best course of action is in this situation.
5 players connected.
2 have an image record open and panned/zoomed to their liking.
I want to force the other 3 players to open the same image record with the same pan/zoom/window position they had previously.
What can I do?
Re-sharing the image seems to adjust the current view for those that already have it open which they don't seem to like. Having the players open their own takes longer than I'd like.

Beat them with a stick.
There is no way to leave the 2 players alone and only affect those without it open to be forced to open it at a set view.
Probably.
Try dragging the image to the character portrait. That might force it open for that one player. Then repeat for the others. But no idea how you would know who does and does not have it open.

That will have to work for now. Maybe its an extension but I thought by default (D&D 5e anyway) shows tiny portraits at the bottom of an image showing which players currently have it open.

It does. The player needs to have the image open and have a token on the image for the little picture to appear.
The only way to have everyone view the same area of an image is to use the 'sync client view' option via right click > View. This syncs the view for all players to the same as what the DM is viewing. Of course the players can immediately resize or re-zoom or whatever they want to do. So there's no guarantee that everyone is looking at the same area. But now that we have ping mode we don't need everyone to have the same view anyway.

I'm actually almost always looking to have everyone have the same image open, but be able to view it how they want, uninterrupted by me. Resharing seems to sync to my GM view (which is rarely to never desirable).
Even singly resharing to those that don't have it open forces my view upon them rather than what they had it at last.

I think you are just going to have to train your users to open up what's needed when, or to not have the visual to help them. You can only lead a player to a map, you can't make them open it ;)

I mean... yeah... ideally they would just open exactly what I want instantaneously... but in the real world.... =)
... The tech already exists to force a share by the GM to all or an individual. I guess my ideal would be for that sharing to:
If they already have it open, don't adjust it for them in any way.
If they don't have it open, open it for them in the last known state (window position/zoom/pan).
If there was no last known state (going from unshared to shared), then sync to GM view (or some generic centered state)
Keep the right click radial option to sync to GM view

What is it you are trying to achieve? If a player opens an image that has previously been open then it will open in the same place and with the same view as when they last closed it. They can access images from the image list. If the player has a token on the image then they can double click on their token on the CT to open the image they are on and it will open in the same place when they last opened it. You can, if you want, drag the image link into chat and when they click on the link it will open the image in the last position it was in when closed.
You don't need to re-share images via right-click > share menu that have already been shared; the players can open the image themselves.

This makes sense. I think I understand how it works. I don't think anything is "broken" just doesn't behave how I'd prefer it did. Sharing and resharing with all or individual seems to sync to GM view. I would prefer it didn't
I ideally want the reshare or dropping the link on a connected player (individual share) to:
If they already have it open, don't adjust it for them in any way. (currently it will sync to GM view)
If they don't have it open, open it for them in the last known state (window position/zoom/pan). (currently it will open for them and sync to GM view)
If there was no last known state (going from unshared to shared), then sync to GM view (or some generic centered state)
Keep the right click radial option to sync to GM view for when that is what is wanted (I can count on one hand the number of times I've wanted this in 4 years of heavy FG use)

If a record has already been shared, you can drag the record link to the chat, the players can click on the link in chat to open the image with their previous view restored.

Yes, but it is still asking them to do something (even if it is super easy).
I can already force it on them (reshare), but it creates a project for them to re-zoom/pan.
I would just prefer re-share to not default to syncing GM view. (a toggle option would probably be best as I'm sure at least some people do prefer it as it is)

I've asked for this for over 2 years. It's been on both feature request lists and even the EXT I used to use said they were no longer doing it because it was going to be placed in CORE, then they didn't do it. They only allow it on non-maximized images.

Dang...
Which extension? Is there any functionality left with it?
Additionally, I've outlined what I want above, but thinking more about this...
In a more perfect world, there would be 2 window states for the players. The normal one that is already kept track of and the clone of the GM's. GM could one button toggle on/off (like toggling Identified/Not Identified) if the GM view overrides the players', flipping between showing them something specific and reverting back to what they each had individually.
