View Full Version : where to make maps, in FGU or Arkenforge?

As the title suggests. I'm really wanting to have LoS, dynamic lighting and animations in my maps, though it seems that if I use Arkenforge there may be some difficulty exporting the map to FGU with these features. I haven't had much luck finding a map making tool that easily exports to FGU with all those features. If there is one, or if just doing things through FGU and maybe subbing to the art sub, I can do that.
Also I like to use Portals, Syrinscape soundlinks and parcels on the map extensions...
Or, if someone has all of those things with updated maps for Descent into Avernus, I'd be willing to buy that setup off of you as well.
Thanks.

It depends. I use CC3+ for my detailed maps and FGU for my quick maps. Still have to add LOS, lighting and FX (if I use them) in FG. I use CC3+ because it has a ton of different styles and I have tens or hundreds of thousands of symbols/stamps/brushes I use with it. I only have a couple of styles with FG (w/o the art pack) and to load all my assets into FG would probably make it unmanageable (I haven't tested asset performance in over a year, when I tried 40k assets then it was unworkable.)
IMO, it seems like if you want all your mapping in one place, and aren't too particular about the available styles or having a 100 different skeletal remains to chose from, then I would just map in FG (assuming you have no need to export) since that is where you will end up using them. And it's easier to learn one tool than multiple.

Not sure if you are already doing this...You can copy symbols (like Mike Schley's stuff) from CC3+ (I almost entered CC2, showing my age, lol) to FG and use them for your "quick maps" too.

Dungeon Alchemist exports maps with line of sight and light which you can import directly into FGU. You probably need to do some touch up I suspect once imported but the main features certainly work. I believe Dungeondraft can also be used but I think some third party script is needed to generate the Line of sight; but don't quote me on that.

The original maps, they already have LoS. If you want to add Animation, tokens will need to be sourced. Portals and audio links will likely need to be setup by you. You can add the animated assets that come with the Fantasy Grounds art subscription to help bring the static maps to life. I don't think individuals can "sell" their personal work without some sort of licensing or agreement in place. The portals, Syrinscape, and animation will need to be setup by you. You can add animated assets to existing maps so that one does not have to reinvent the wheel.

I'm very aware :) And when I tried this soon after FGU was initially release my 40,000 plus symbols brought FG to it's knees. One of these days I will try again, but the asset window is hard enough to navigate as it is that I don't really see it being very friendly for such a large set of symbols.

That is my confident ;) understanding as well. Maps/images made with the FG Art packs can not be sold commercially (even on the Forge) without a license agreement.
Not that I'm a big commercial creator, but the last thing I want to do is infringe IP in case such makes it into one of my infrequent commercial releases. All the CC3+ symbols don't have that limitation :)

I am, of course, talking about for personal use. I'm not even good enough about thinking of publishing any map I had made, lol.

Should you become interested in publishing, DungeonDraft has a very favorable license for commercial use of the base included assets, and it will export to vtt so the maps can be imported into FG.

Dungeondraft offers native support to FGU now, export in the vtt format.

Don't put yourself down, there are PLENTY of untalented hacks out there confidently producing crap that yours will likely blow out of the water.
