View Full Version : Walls not being walls

In Keep of the Borderlands the LOS does not seem to be working right. The walls exist on the map but no matter what combination of layer settings I use, the walls don't do anything. Players can see through and walk through them. What combination should I have or should I resign myself to making my own wall layer?

You didn't show a view of the image data panel in Play mode; but is the Enable/Disable Line-of-sight toggle enabled?

If it is enabled and still having issue, then we'll need a zipped up copy of your campaign folder, so that I can forward to @pindercarl and see if we can reproduce here.
Thanks,

In the screenshot, the layers with the walls are set to not share. If this is the case, then the walls will not be active for the players.

Yes, in that picture the walls are turned off. I should have taken a SS with them on, that is on me. However, it does not make a difference if the walls are on or off as the affect is the same. I've attached a zipped copy of the campaign.
So the camp folder does not get under the file limit size. What can I get rid of here that you all do not need?

Try posting on Google Drive, OneDrive or DropBox; mark the zip file as Share to Anyone with Link; and then post the link here or via PM.

Once I turned on sharing, the walls worked as expected. Make sure that you have sharing, visible, and use walls enabled for any of the layers you want the players to see and have active LOS.60353

In your screencap, the very top layer without a name, that layer's walls I created last night. That layer did not come with the module so ignore it as it only exists in that part of the dungeon. I circled that layer in black in the screenshot labelled "PC Map Only Walls"
The three layers below are the ones from the module that have walls but they do not work.
In the screenshot "PC Map Only Walls Up" the layer config PC map shared, DM map not shared, and bottom map layer not shared. In the image "Bottom Layer Active" it shows that even with bottom layer active and walls active on that layer the players are still able to walk through the walls.
In "In PC View Walls Up" the layers are configured as in your screenshot with my added walls layer turned off. The PCs can see and move through the walls as shown in the video.
Other then the screenshot showing my added wall layer all screenshots and the video are from the view of me signing on as a client to the server via a second instance of FGU.
So, as you can see, the only wall layer that works is the one I added for a game I ran last night and that layer only exists in the Goblin area of the map since that is where the players are. If I have to add a wall layer for the whole dungeon, that's fine. It will act a little wonkey because for whatever reason the doors work on layers that came with the module even though the walls do not.

As shown in your screenshot, the following three layers are not shared with the players (<Unnamed Top Layer>, Caves - GM - HQ, Map - The Caves of ...). Any walls on these layers will also not be shared. In order for walls to work, the layer they are on must be shared to players.

Alrighty, Here is the screenshot trying that with all layers except GM map visible to players. I moved a player's token to a place on the map where I have not yet created walls. This what a player sees.

The map (as shown in your video) doesn't have walls where you see the player moving through "the wall." The module in the store doesn't indicate it has LOS and when I revert the your changes to map, there is no LOS. I'm not sure where the additional data is from, but it is incomplete.

It appears to be working correctly when I test - the PCs can only see (and move) through areas that aren't blocked as LoS.
In the screenshot below the GM view is on the left, showing the break in LoS in the wall, the player view is on the right. This looks different from your second screenshot in post #10, but we don't know what the GM settings are for that view.

For sake of keeping it simple because I think there is a confusion as to what I had added in trying to fix the LOS and what is vanilla LOS.
While the store page does not indicate LOS, the LOS is there. I created a new game and loaded the Keep module without any tinkering on my part when I was trying to get the LOS to work. Here is the screenshot of a vanilla load of the Keep module as bought from the store showing that LOS is there but doesn't seem to do anything. I don't understand how the LOS red walls and blue doors can be on the map but not doing anything. Is this some weird carry over from FG classic?

So, the issue here with the vanilla B2 module "Map - The Caves of Chaos - PC" map is that the LoS is on the GM layer - see the "Use Walls" icon? This is only displayed if there is LoS on that layer.
This specific map needs the LoS moving to the player layer. This should be done in the base DLC as this is an issue with the base product.
Referring to the screenshot below:
1) The LoS for this map is all on the "Caves - GM - HQ" layer.
2) This layer is not shared with the players, so the LoS won't work for the players.

I've submitted the fix for this. Apologies for the trouble. I recently added higher quality maps but I mistakenly put the LOS on the DM visible only layer.

I still see the walls on the GM layer only. However, this might be user error. In the past when I have attempted to update a map of my own it has not updated with the new exported module. For example, I put a bunch of pins on a map and then export the adventure to an active game that is already running the adventure I am writing, basically I am writing as the adventure goes on. However, whenever I do this it never updates the map. The story list would update but the story pins would not be on the map after reloading the new version of the module I had exported. I had never figured out what I was doing wrong so I would just add the new pins to the map and went on my merry way.
So, perhaps this is the same issue where the update is valid but just not showing on my side because I already had the module loaded so for whatever reason the update does not show.
I've tried the following:
Unload the module then reactivate
Unloaded, restarted fantasy grounds, reactivate
Refreshed asset with module loaded
Refreshed asset with module unloaded then reloaded module
Unloaded module, refreshed assets, restarted fantasy ground, refreshed assets, reloaded module
None of these things updates a map with the pins (of my creation).
Is there something else I should try before declaring the update did not work?

Can you please right click on the module in the Library->Modules window, and select the Revert menu option? (Or click the revert button on the top left of the image window.)
Once a record is loaded into a campaign and modified in any way, then the data is remembered until the record is reverted.

That did it.
Thank you, I never knew that was possible and it is a trick I have been looking for, for quite some time
