View Full Version : Issue with Effects Layers after most recent update

There seems to be an issue with the ability to hide/reveal areas of an effects layer after the most recent update.

I can create a new campaign, no extensions loaded, load in a map, add a water effects layer, and it covers the whole map, I'm not able to mask it out in certain areas, for example say a river on a map surrounded by grass.

I've noticed this seems to affect all maps, old ones that I had created or purchased, and new ones created in a new campaign.

I was unsure if you were aware of the issue.

Thanks!

Thanks for the report. I'm taking a look at this now.

I was able to identify the issue and submit a fix. This should be addressed in the next release update. Thanks again.

D&D Classic, just updated. Add fx layer - goes on whole map - can't carve out areas to hide or show.

Edit: I don't know if the update I downloaded around 6:30 PM Eastern tonight encompassed the fix you mention Carl, just posting to say I'm having the same issue.

I am still having the same issue here.

What I am noticing is that I can add new fX layers and enable of disable areas, but pre existing ones now cover the entire map and are only visible when a token is selected.

Are experiencing the exact same issue, unable to mask the water effect at all?

This sounds like a different issue. Can you provide a copy of the campaign? I'm having a little difficulty understanding what you are seeing. Thanks.

Its very odd behavior I am encountering.
Here are the steps to reproduce
Have an active npc/pc in combat tracker
select NPC/PC token and enable LOS and player vision preview (at this point you will not see any of the fX)
in options enable Fog of War (On)
now the entire map is under water

I can send you the campaign, but it is a module that I am developing for castles and crusades ruleset and is not released publicly yet, what would be the best way to get that to you?

Also, creating new fX layers works properly

Can you zip it up and either send it to [email protected], or put on a Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. and share it with the same email? Thanks.

I'm seeing issues with lighting interfering with the effects layer as well.

After the latest update to repair effects, they are almost working as expected. However characters with light sources or infravision can see effects that are not applied to their area (like the torch has a blizzard going on in it). Also if I enable lighting, the effects don't work, so I can choose between lighting in an area, or having the effects, but not both.
I think you've almost got it. Thanks for working on it.

Edit to add: maybe it's working right? I'll admit I'm new to the FGU interface, and I'm not sure if some of these won't work until the players get there? There is definitely some potential for user error here. At any rate, I think the current fix has it to a point where it will work. Thank you again.

If lighting is enabled, FX are only visible in lit areas. This can be from ambient light, lights placed on the map, lights attached to tokens, or special visions assigned to tokens.

+1 to this, having the same issue with a couple of the effects. Blizzard notably is a very bad offender. With mask fully on its still like 30/50% visible everywhere else on the map. If i disable line of sight, the effect is correctly masked to the parts of the map it is supposed to be on. When I enable Line of sight the effect becomes global to where the players are and I cannot make it go away even by apply a mask to it.

Can you verify that you are on the latest version? The masking issues should be resolved in 4.5.2. Thanks.

Attached screenshots. Version 4.5.2. Working without lighting and LoS, breaks when they are turned on. The blizzard effect is visible by the PCs even though it should only be in the single room up north.

I got the files. The image "level3" in the campaign does not have any walls or lighting. Can you send a copy of the campaign with the data shown in the screenshot? Thanks.

Sorry for the lack of clarity, please check: *Image: (Map) Library (Level 3), level3 is just a webp file it does not have anything. I have it set up where I removed the original *Image: (Map) Library (Level 3)
opacity and layered a new image (higher quality graphics) on top of it. I then added an Fx layer.

Image should be (Map) Library (Level 3)

Thanks for the extra information. Lights attached to tokens are not affecting effects layers when lighting is enabled in the GM's session unless a token is selected. The effect does appear correct for the players. I'll have to investigate the cause.

I misunderstood the FX masking on that map. After closer examination, I discovered that the token fog-of-war was being added to the FX mask. A fix has been submitted and should be available in the release update.
