View Full Version : I'd like to turn off a new feature - possible?

I dislike the arrow keys in the bottom right corner of images that came with the new update. Feels cluttered. Is there any way to turn this feature off? I didn't see one under Options.

Thanks for any assistance.

No, they are part of the image window.

I don't think so. The icons replace the one that was there before.

Ah, thanks. Whom do I bribe to add the ability to turn it off in a future update? :D

Back in the day, before Unity, when I could make themes, I always removed the arrow Icon. And now it is an even bigger window. Sigh.

Please give us a toggle option. They are so unnecessary!

Normally I would suggest you add it to the Wish List on the Idea Informer site, but it is currently down.

Many, many people have requested an improvement to the previous method of scrolling images around. What we have here now is a considerable and welcome improvement to what was there before. It's clear, easy to understand, and easy to operate. It's also unobtrusive. However I do understand not everyone likes things getting better.

I could not disagree more.

By the way. I didn't say to remove those pesky arrows at all. I merely suggested a toggle option. There is so much we can turn on and off? Why not this?

As for things getting better. I dunno. I feel like FG for years has kept making changes, that I simply don't like. So that sentiment is a matter of perception. I am not saying that everything they do is bad. Not at all. But every update, there is a thing or two, where I just scratch my head and go: Why did they make it worse?`

Like... that ginoumous title bar. It is stupidly big. And why have a dropdown menu for images to the right. Why not just take all those small icons and put them on top of the frame with the rest of them? So much easier!

The bar at the top shows the new combat list tracker (I assume that's what you mean). The dropdown on the right is just another way of accessing the different modes. More ways to do things is good. (again a matter of perspective - the sides of which we are polar opposites it seems). Not everything is going to satisfy everyone all of the time. But the clamour for UI improvements has been long and the past few updates have delivered that (again from my perspective).

Emphasis mine...

You seem to have completely overlooked what they were asking for there. The old movement icon at the bottom was pretty bad. The new ones look like they are pretty good. But not everyone wants part of their map covered up with buttons they won't be using. All they are asking for is an option to turn off one of the many things that are just wasting space on the UI so they can see more of their game.

As far as the title bar, here are a few comparisons.
60073
With buttons showing the new title bar and buttons at the top take up over 60% more space at the top of my image while the buttons themselves are 70% the size of what they used to be. Why is there so much empty space around the names of the images? Why are the buttons even smaller?

60074
Without the buttons showing, the bar at the top of the page is almost twice the height as it was before this update.

I pulled it up without the modified dark theme I'm using and the numbers are still the same so it's not a theme issue.

Edit: Small edit to fix how I was stating percentages, because something being 160% of the size it used to be isn't 160% more space, it's only 60%.

I'm with you on this. The new UI elements are just eating up too much space. When I'm running my game, I want to see more art, less fiddly bits!

This is my point exactly! I have no issue with people liking them. Might be handy if you do a lot of roll playing on battle maps. I don't! I use images mostly for images of npcs' I mostly use the Genesys ruleset. Even if I used a "battle map" on that, that would merely be a range indicator. So no use for the arrows.

So... I am not against the improvement. I am just stating, that for some, they are waste of space and gets in the way. Hence. Can we just have an option here? I don't think that is a controversial ask?

Yes, but there are also people who have repeatedly complained that they wanted new/better replacement for the old icon and that they wanted something on screen (Mac people, you know who don't want to use a 3-button mouse). Yes it sounds like an option would be easy.

As for adding an option to turn it off. Sounds easy, but as Moon says, the more options he adds, the more testing that has to be done with every release. The slower releases come, the more bugs they come with.

Instead, I assume someone in the community can make and maintain and extension for those who want to turn it off.

Im not digging the new map features either. For me it's hard to grasp the edge of the map now for resizing which I do often during a session (well I used to anyway). Now I have to find a magical sweet spot right at a special spot at the right lower corner which for some reason is difficult for me. I would appreciate please consider giving us a toggle to revert to the old way that really was easier for me....but I guess it was "better" for everyone else? (yay, thanks everyone else!)

This seems like a different issue, I suggest you report it in its own thread if you think it is, that way it can be discussed, and possible resolved on it's own.

If this is what I think it is, these types of issues have been reported with other builds and quickly fixed as rarely are they intentional.

Yes, that's a different issue related to how the ruleset and/or extensions you are using are defining the resize edges of the image window frame. It should be reported in the ruleset support thread for the ruleset you are using. Tell the developer that they need to adjust the resize_imagebox template and the insideoffset tag of the imagebox frame definition.

If you mean resizing the image size on screen, you can use CTRL+left click drag for that.

If you will allow me to point out one thing: you just described their jobs.

It isn't as if what I mentioned is some gigantic rework of FG, rather a simple baseline function which doesn't affect any rulesets. Let's not make this more difficult than it is. Look... for people without a middle mouse button this IS a huge improvement. And good for them! I just feel that this was made with very little consideration for all use cases of images. That's all!

I wish Smiteworks would release a simple extension with the code / graphics necessary for creating themes. Would be nice with all the psd files, so people could just go nuts and be creative. Right. I used to be able to do that before Unity, but I don't have anything up to date, that really works anymore. I would happily fix this myself, if I had the tools to do so! Anyone around that has this?

Yep, it's their job. And every decision they make impacts us users. And just like I said, if they chose to add this as an option, it will negatively impact the rate and quality of all future releases. Small I know, but effectively exponential for life (or removed). Just look at how many dozens or hundreds or new options they are asked for each year. Maybe the are too conservative, maybe not.

But, know that I don't mean this as a way to shut down the conversation or imply that folks should not voice their opinions. Everyone's feedback is critical to SmiteWorks ability to make the right/best decisions. And they are not always going to get it right. And they will probably never get "it" right for every user.

I'm not sure if it's been updated for the new rulesets, but would definitely recommend looking at Hearth.

It's not the simple template you're asking for but has a lot of things to learn from.
