View Full Version : Spectacular Settlements - By Nord Games, why just 5E?

I just purchased Spectacular Settlements via the FG Store. It is listed as 5E compatible in the store. In-game it is only visiable the the 5E ruleset. The original PDF (which I also own) is listed as System Neutral. The Nord Game website also lists it as system neutral. I do not believe there is anything within this that is particular to 5E(?). Is it possible to release an update to make it available for any ruleset?

Thank you for your consideration.

If you use this extension:
https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/266/view

You can open any module in any rule set.

Not everything will work properly but you will have access to the story, ref manual, etc.

Thanks...but since the entire module is like 6 billion rollable tables and rollable tables is not one of the items listed as "possibly" working, not really a solution.

Did you load it with Universal Module?

Maybe it was created inside a 5e SRD campaign? One for the devs to answer "are there any CoreRPG items" that are the same across all rulesets? I am not sure there are (apart from Story/Reference).

Since each ruleset has its own data structures, I think there would need to be a 5e version, PF version, SW version etc., unless all the tables bring up Story and Chat output or other universal results (like Parcels maybe)

I’ve notified James to bring this to the developers attention. I don’t have the product but if it is just tables which don’t call any system specific NPCs, items, etc it should be system agnostic. It may also depend on what the publisher licences Smiteworks to publish.

Thanks!! Understood about potential licensing conflict that may have been signed. If it is that, might be worth revisiting with them. It is a great product and that has a much wider appeal.

Do you know.....could Story Templates be sold, or even offered for free, on the Forge for this product? I am making a bunch of them and would love to share.

Thanks!

It depends upon what such a story template module contains. If your templates called content from the module and did not copy that content, then you should be fine. But if you were to copy the text of their module (or copies of their tables etc) into yours, then you would need their permission; either directly or via a community or fan license if they have such.

In short, you can't redistribute (money is not relevant) someone elses IP (most commonly images or text). But you can distribute a module in FG that links to (and therefore requires) the official module that has the IP in it.

Thanks for the logical input! Understood. I'd have to contact them then. I would only be adding text like "Age," then the result of a linked table result (not copying their tables). All the text I would add would be single word catagories that are from their City Sheet Forms, which are included as images in FG. Technically the simple text in the form I'd be adding is their IP for their system, and I'd never want to violate that.

Example Template:
Trading Post
Name: (add your own name for Trading post)

Basic Information
Origin: [Table2.01 - Origin]
Specialty: [Table2.02 - Speciality]
Age: [Table2.03 - Age]
Etc., Etc.

I had expected these templates to be included in the FG version and was surprised they were not. There are some complicated table results to deal with due to modifiers from previous roll results, but I think they can be worked out using multiple templates. They can't be 100% automated without an extension to carry the modifiers, but by using some manual entry and multiple templates, it might make for a semi-automated result to quickly roll up a town or city on the fly (which is what FG is all about).

Could always pass that request to the developer and thereby the owners to add it into the FG module. It could be an oversight, or could be intentional. Might be easy enough that they wouldn't mind updating it.

Hi,

The product was released for 5E because the stats for the NPC follow the format for 5E. I'll look into how the deal with system neutral (maybe they remove the npc portion, or make them very generic). In all cases i'll release a System neutral (as this is really a world buiding tool). i'll let you know when i'm done. my suggestion would be to refund the 5e version and buy the neutral version when it comes up shortly (official neutral system version)

Thanks for the information. I see now, the PDF has NPCs that state they are based on 5th edition basic rules. (at end of the 482 page PDF.) I have had this PDF for years, never even knew it was back there!! They also hide it a bit, no traditional 5e stat blocks, just a list of data for each character.

I think I will keep it, though I bought it the day before it went on sale!! I always have bad timing, been waiting a long time to buy, finally do it and BAM, sale next day, lol!

Hi,

now that you see why it's released under the 5E banner (not neutral), ill let the matter drop. To make it system neutral I would have to remove the NPC and that is not what was intended by Nord Game
