View Full Version : Party vision bugged with LOS?

Hi Guys,
yesterday I tried to used a newly created map with LOS for my game group in combat. All tokens are drawn from combat tracker to the map.
And all players could see all monsters on the map as icons but not the environment around them through walls and LOS lines. I closed partyvision but that helped not - I had to turn all monsters in neighboring rooms manually invisible again to solve that problem.
We tried a few things like closing maps and open them again. But it seems there is a "general" view ( if a player just click anywhere on the map) that differs from the view that players get, when they click directly on their own token.
In this general view the players could see a lot more then allowed through token sight and LOS - are there any options I donīt know about?
Thanks for your help.

Combining this with your other post about lots of extensions and some errors - you are going to have to test it without extensions first...

I deactivated all extensions and made two screenshots - depending on how many times a new party member that was not on the map before sees the dungeon (clicking once or twice on his own token) - party vision is turned off.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Most interestingly you can see here the playerspreview on the DM side - should normally only show the environment around one token, but here you see all creatures on the map - I use this preview often as a DM and perhaps thats the reason, that the players can see the same after the DM uses this preview?
Here an screenshot...

I think we need a screenshot of the map unlocked so that we can see the layers. I'm thinking that one or more layers have been made invisible or DM view only.

Is it a pre-purchased module? Can you revert the image?

I converted a map from "saving commodore crux" pdf module to FGU, putting LOS on the map and a layer of ocean effect for the water - as I said, the water effect is not visible in spite of using no extensions.
Here is a screenshot- all layers visible to all.
Thanks

for convenience I deleted the 3rd layer because there was only a door on it- so now only ocean effect layer and map with LOS layer - no difference -still see all tokens in players preview mode on DM side

I don't see anything from the screenshot and I can't replicate the issue in 5e. Maybe you'll need to zip up the campaign folder and upload it here so we can take a closer look.

and I give you also the log file - I tried to change ocean through water in the Fx layer but then nothing moves - using all the switches in all different positions doesnīt change anything - if I switch back to ocean, the water flows again.

You put it somewhere that you can upload to and attach the link here.

Nothing to do with you current issue (at least I don't think it has) but looking at the modules you have loaded there seems to be a lot of duplication and unnecessary modules. You have, for example, the Essentials Kit rulebook and the D&D Basic Rules as well as the Players Handbook. Since you have the PHB you don't need either of the other two. I'd suggest not loading them and not sharing them with your players either. You also have a number of adventure modules open. Since the campaign is named Spelljammer I'm assuming that you are running the Spelljammer adventure. If that is so then I'm not sure you also need Planescape, and Tomb of Annihilation open. You also have both the players versions and the DM versions of several modules. You really only need the DM modules open - if you need them at all during play. Having all of these modules open will eat up memory and that might be the cause of your issue in not seeing the fx on that map.

Thanks for your advice, but I donīt think, that ocean effect is any different to water - so why only water will not function? If there were a capacity problem, there should be more things going wrong or? I have no lags, no long waiting time and a very good network... so not really reasonable that only one function should be hampered by capacity... but anyway I can leave a few things to check... I am loving having all player modules on, where player can buy equipment or have a look at feats or rules... rock of bral is a center of all equipment you get from anywhere in the D&D multiverse -same as classes or races or rules...

I have deactivated all your advice modules and more - no better effect - all fx effects are functioning except water...

OK, I hate to tell you but the campaign works fine for me as you can see from the attached images the first is player view and the other is the DM view. All of the fx are working including water. There's a few weird things like NPCs not having tokens and not showing on the map correctly but that'll be down to extensions I assume. But otherwise everything looks fine. Maybe if you try resetting Fog of war on each PC token it'll help with the line of sight thing; but I don't see any issues with the fx layers.

I'm actually seeing the problem he reports, after I downloaded his campaign and tried what he said: See video here:

The Ocean effect works, but if I change the effect to Water it doesn't work, doesn't show any effect. All other effects work fine (rain, snow, blizzard etc), but the Water effect doesn't seem to do anything, even increasing intensity or speed.

strangely older maps with water are working in my campaign - it seems to be a problem with this map or with newer code - I tried to create another water layer on another battlemap and there water is functioning quiet well - so seems to be a map problem.

ae you sure, that your player preview on DMS side is not showing hidden tokens? I used another battlemap and moved tokens from CT there in hidded areas and in players preview (lighting enabled, clicking on players token) they are still shown?
Thanks

I was looking at the players view. I joined my own game and looked at the map with a player selected. I wasn't using the DM players view. There are a lot of blank tokens on that map; they just showed red squares. I assume that this is because some extension you are using isn't active.

then please try again players view clicking twice on players token or next to it AFTER or DURING DM has players view on - on the DM players view side are not only gravestone tokens but also tokens from NPCs visible on the map even if he pC is away from them and LOS is between them...
The NPC tokens aare not from an extension - you can move them and they are reactive to CT.

The map in question has lighting enabled, but there are no lights on the map. Image effects are masked by lighting (so that they are not visible in dark areas). This map does have ambient lighting enabled but there is a bug where ambient lighting is not included in the lighting for FX visibility.

Right click on the token and go to visibility > reset fog of war.

you are right, thanks you very much - this is the bug - after turning off the ambient light, the "water" effect is visible again on the map -strange that the devs were not aware of this bug;-)
You didīt know a solution of the second problem of mine? The visibility of lots of hidden (behind LOS) monster tokens by players if they click twice on their toons tokens? I described the problem in detail above, but nobidy seems to know a solution?
Thanks

The only person who responded in this thread who is an FG dev is @pindercarl. So, yes, the devs are aware of this bug.
