View Full Version : Any chance, that newer web image file standards will be used by FGU?

Hi,

I tried to use animated maps from other software to directly import into FGU- thats very time comsuming and it will get very big maps very fast- the devs from Dungenon alchemist fro example answered:

"It's not a simple render specifically because FGU only supports the older VP8 codec which is less efficient and takes more time to render."

Any chance that FGU will use newer file formats so that we can import more features with less MB?

Thanks

Micael

As far as I know it's a limitation of the Unity engine. If it gets support for VP9 then I assume that FG will be able to use that.

Specifically, VP8/VP9 codecs are for animated files. The restriction is from the Unity platform that FG run on. If Unity ever supports VP9 codec, then I'm sure FG will as well.

Thanks, and is someone working on the unity plattform on these new codecs? Do you know for any plans or could you ask them to do that?
Thanks Micael

The unity platform is a whole other commercial program used by tens of thousands of developers worldwide. It has its own developer community etc. I'm sure this is a discussion there, but no idea if or what any plans on updating the codec support for.

Though the Unity company did just lay off 25% of their workforce.

One benefit of VP8 files is while a little larger, they take a little less processing power to use them. Artists and map makers usually create VP 9 assets because it's the default output format for 3D Animation apps like blender.

You can leave your inputs about VP9 on the Unity Roadmap here https://unity.com/roadmap/unity-platform/audio-video in the "Extensible Codec Framework" under "Media Framework" section.

Thanks for providing this information. I've added a request for support of VP9 codec.
