View Full Version : UI changes and streamlining

I have to say I'm impressed by the progress FGU is making in modernising, streamlining and updating the UI. Given that the starting point was replicating FGC, it's very impressive how much things have improved over the last year or two. I'm bringing new players in to FGU from time to time and it is notable how much less hand-holding I am having to do in their first couple of sessions.

So congrats to the team and a job well done so far (and I'm sure with plans for further streamlining and improvement).

In that spirit, one that has been bugging me gently for a while is the presence of /chat commands. Some of these belong in chat: those to do with the chat itself, or to stuff that is "done" through the chat medium, like /die or /emote or /whisper.

Some are probably justifiable because they prompt FGU to enter a different mode, like /console or /export.

But I think there are some that really ought to be moved to options:
- /dicevolume (we literally only discovered that one this week after 3 years of playing)
- /imagequality
- /vsync

belong somewhere more standard and discoverable. (Or at least should be added there as well as chat).

Can I put in a plea for that to be considered?

I'll add to the idea informer when I can, but I can't access that site at all today for some reason.

Cheers, Hywel

You ever get this in the wish list? I'd totally vote for it.

And I agree that I like the new direction of trending towards modernization and updating the UI. It's long been the biggest criticism of the application. Keep up the great work so far!

My 2 cents is that adding and doing stuff with Assets feels old. I don't know why - maybe it's the bags icons, the difficulty I had to import an image through the UI itself, the inability to see what's in the folders, the player inability to do stuff with Assets or the many pages to click through - no idea, but something about the experience feels dated. I'm sure an expert on on UX could explain it better than I can. At least it does definitely load and respond faster now than when I last used it years ago. But putting the chat functions in their own options on the UI is both a clearer suggestion and probably much easier to do.

Is there a list of these anywhere? I didn't even know they were a thing - which, I guess, supports your argument they should be more visible.

Most of the chat commands are listed here https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/996640083/Using+the+Chat+Window

You can also type /help into the chat window to get a list of available commands.

The chat commands become a kitchen sink place where we can add a new feature easily without requiring UI. This means we can roll out that feature quickly. They are normally reserved for testing new features that we are not sure belong in the final app, or things which cater to a very small minority of users where it is a big deal for them. For instance, we think vsync and imagequality are chat commands that 99% of our users should never need to change. I could see dice volume being moved somewhere else because that feels more like a simple, per user setting.
