View Full Version : Help? Windows installer download gives me obsolete 2021 version. How do I get 2023v?

Trying to install FGU on my new laptop (with enough horses to run it like a dream). Sadly the install has been a raft of failures. I've been working with FG tech support for a couple days but we're both running out of ideas. Sadly, I'll have to run my game Thursday night on my dog of an old laptop (avoid showing maps, images, etc.).

Anyway, simple question for the FG Hive Mind... I downloaded the Installer from https://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/FantasyGroundsUnity.php clicking the green Windows button. (I got there from the Downloads menu picking Fantasy Grounds Unity. I'm running a Windows 11 Home machine from Asus). When I run it, and I get to the Updater program it displays that the Updater version is v4.1.0 (2021-05-27). The FG support person showed me that the correct Updater version is 4.4.0 (2023-06-15). Certainly seems like that could be the source of my frustrations. So why am I not getting the latest version when I download it from that place on the site? Or is the Installer program pulling the wrong Updater when it runs? Not sure how the scripting is organized.

I guess I'm going to keep wandering around the FG site to see if there is a secret "latest version" download link. Any guidance gratefully accepted. :)

(Thought I'd found the 2023 version but I keep trying and keep getting the 2021 version. I know I saw the 2023 version during one of my install attempts but I can't find it again...

This gives me the old 2021 version... https://www.fantasygrounds.com/filelibrary/FGUWebInstall.exe Where else should I look?

The current version of the FG Updater application is 4.1.0 (2021-05-27). So, if you have 4.1.0 for the updater, you should be fine.

The current version of the FG App itself is 4.4.7 (2023-12-02)

The installer is effectively the updater engine. You install that, and then it runs and installs the application itself. As Sulimo points out, you;ve got the right version, you just need to run it.

Well, this is interesting...

I always thought that the FGU Updater would self-update as well as updating FGU proper? If so, how comes I have version 4.4.0 and Sulimo has 4.1.0?

@LoZeno has the correct version of the updater.

The reason why people may have an older updater is if the permissions on the machine have somehow blocked the updater from updating itself. In those scenarios, I recommend deleting the FG application folder (not data folder) (usually "C:\Program Files\SmiteWorks\Fantasy Grounds"), and then running installer from web site again.

I was able to do a Force Update and that updated the updater.

Thank you to all for your responses.

I was able to do a Force Update and that updated the updater.

What is a Force Update?

I've tried all the tricks from FG tech support and it appears that something is keeping the Updater from Updating itself and keeping it from being able to complete the installation process. I've uninstalled Norton Security, took the laptop back to factory settings and didn't reinstall Norton, turned off Windows Virus Scan, allowed FGUpdaterEngine.exe and FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe through the Firewall but it always dies with this error message...

Doesn't seem to want to let me attach a screenshot of the error message... so what else is new sigh. Here's the text of the error message:

Data Folder Not Found
Details:
C:/Program Files/SmiteWorks/Fantasy Grounds/FGUpdaterEngine
There should be 'FGUpdaterEngine_Data'
folder next to the executable.

Naturally, that folder IS there so something is preventing the updater from seeing it.

This is a brand, new ASUS Gaming Laptop (lots of horses under the hood, Windows 11 Home). Nothing gets me past this point so clearly I'm not fixing the one thing that's tripping it up.

Anyone see anything like this? Any ideas?

Possibly permissions issues; see here https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1161756673/Fix+Write+Permissions+Windows

You could also try running the updater directly from ProgramFiles/Smiteworks/FantasyGroundsUpdater.exe

You can force an update by going into Settings and clicking on Force App Update.

One other thing you have entered your username/password and license key into settings?
