Trying to have a player set a node on an NPC record in the CT

Is this possible? I can do it as a host, but I get an error when logged in as a player. I am trying to create a node on a NPC.

The node must be public, or the player must own it, I think

Pretty sure players can't own NPC nodes. You might be able to do something with OOTB Messaging. But that's only what I recall from what others have said in response to similar questions.
