View Full Version : All Campaign Data has disappeared on FGU (D&D 5E Ruleset)

For the last several weeks, I've been DM'ing a group through N4 Treasure Hunt - At the time I started, there wasn't a Fantasy Grounds compatible module, so I ended up purchasing the module from DM Guild and the Convert to 5E handout - I've had major problems running the campaign, mainly because there wasn't a way to run combat with the tokens over the VTT. Last Saturday, I had enough of the frustration, and remembered seeing the Treasure Hunt module in the store, and the maps were set up for FGU! I purchased and installed the module, and now the first version of the adventure, with XP, Treasure, notes etc is not to be found. Unfortunately, I didn't do any backup so I'm hoping that I'm missing something obvious.
Can anybody make suggestions on how to fix this?
EDIT - I found the original campaign in the folder that holds the program and etc's I found the images that were missing, but I don't know for certain that the rest of the data is there, since everything is XML and I'm clueless about how to do anything with that file format.
So, any suggestions on how to get the old campaign data into FGU without losing access to the maps and Encounters? Thanks for any help

I'm not exactly sure what you have done here. Did you open the Treasure Hunt module in the same campaign that you were previously running or did you start a new campaign?
If you want the Treasure Hunt assets (maps etc) then you should open it in the same campaign that you were running previously; each campaign is a separate entity and whilst it might be possible to finesse the xml to include things from another campaign you'd need to know exactly what you were doing. If you want to transfer data from one campaign to another you should export the data from the campaign into a module and you can then open that in any other campaign. See here https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/996640899/Using+the+Library+and+Activating+Modules#Module-Export and video forty-one here https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?55797-How-do-I-in-Unity
If you did open the module in the same campaign and the campaign has somehow become corrupted here's how to get the date (or most of it at least) back https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1207304196/Restore+Campaign+to+an+Earlier+Save
If none of the above covers your issue could you provide more details on what you did to get to the point where your campaign data disappeared.

A bit of background information here that may help with the confusion. I'm making assumptions based off post #1.
1) The original campaign created was for D&D 5E - with manual creation of the N4 data within that module. I'm not sure what your comment about "there wasn't a way to run combat with the tokens over the VTT" related to - but I'm guessing that is lack of knowledge of how to all set that up, as running combat in the 5E ruleset is something that thousands of gamers do each month; this doesn't, however, relate to your specific issue.
2) The N4 module in the store is for the D&D 2E ruleset, not the 5E ruleset. Therefore to see the contents of the store N4 module, you'll need to create and open a FG campaign using the D&D 2E ruleset.
3) You can't see data from another campaign while within a different campaign. As Zacchaeus mentions, you can export the data from a campaign into a module, to open in another campaign - but that module will only be openable in a campaign of the same ruleset. If you've exported the data into a module from your original N4 D&D 5E campaign, then you'll only be able to see that module in another D&D 5E campaign, not the D&D 2E campaign you'll be using to open the store N4 module. There are ways around this (using the Univeral Module extension (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/266/view), for example).
I appreciate that's a lot of information and intricacies, but this is probably the main background reason as to why you can't see your original 5E campaign data.
Let us know what your intent is - are you wanting to run the D&D 2E Treasure Hunt module using the D&D 5E ruleset? Or are you wanting to run it using the D&D 2E ruleset?

Hi; thanks for the reply I'm responding to both messages, so this may be rather disjointed -
- to clarify, I created the campaign under the 5E Ruleset, and when I was attempting to run combat on FGU, I was not able to figure out how to put the orcs/goblins on the maps that were included with the module 1st Edition Treasure Hunt, so I could not target them in Combat Tracker, if that helps?
I'm fairly certain that I opened the new version of N4 Treasure Hunt in the same campaign (titled Treasure Hunt by Aaron Alston),
However, when I open FGU and go to Story - the information from the original adventure is missing, and in the Group Drop Down section, the Aaron Alston version is no longer there, what is there is N4 Treasure Hunt (1E)
I was able to locate the Aaron Alston adventure in the folder on my hard drive, that holds the FGU program and campaigns. The Treasure Hunt by Aaron Alston is listed as a campaign, as is N4 Treasure Hunt (1E)
I am using the Universal Module Extension
And I just took a look at the How To Module Export and I'm sorry but it reads as Gibberish, I'll try to watch the YouTube later this morning if I can get some sleep
So, now that I've found the missing/hidden data, I'm looking for help having both in the same campaign. I apologize if I'm not coherent, the caffeine hasn't kicked in yet.
My Intention is to run the module using the 5E ruleset.

You can't use D&D 1E monsters in the D&D 5E ruleset - they're quite different and have completely different data structures. This is a gotcha of using the Universal Module extension and is mentioned in the Forge page, and associated forum thread, for that extension. You'll need to use the D&D 5E equivalents.
For the N4 module from the store, look in the reference manual - recent conversions no longer use story entries, they put all of the text in the reference manual of the module.
So, now that I've found the missing/hidden data, I'm looking for help having both in the same campaign.
Load your D&D 5E campaign with the Universal Module extension enabled - I believe your campaign is called "Treasure Hunt by Aaron Alston"
Open the "N4 Treasure Hunt (1E)" module from within the library once the campaign is loaded.
Refer to the reference manual in the N4 module for the adventure text.
Substitute D&D 5E equivalents for NPCs/Monsters, magic items, spell, etc., etc..

Okay - that clarifies the issue with the monsters, etc. Thanks and I did find the reference manual for the story.
Open your D&D 5E campaign with the Universal Module extension enabled.
Open the N4 D&D 1E store module.
Refer to the reference manual in the N4 module for the adventure text.

My problem is how to get the characters that were being played in the original campaign, are not in the N4 Treasure Hunt (1E) Adventure with the 5E maps etc
I also had Notes for the Players that included a bunch of background information that is no longer visible.
Are you aware of how to get the characters and notes into the current module?

I'm really confused about what you have setup and what you're trying to do - in terms of which Fantasy Grounds ruleset you're using. This is very important as FG will restrict access to some data based off the ruleset you are using.
What FG ruleset are you using for your current campaign?
What FG ruleset were you using for the original campaign?

Notes do not transfer between campaigns. Stories can be copied between campaigns using the Module Export.
Characters can be imported from one campaign to another, as long as the campaigns use the same ruleset. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDq6AbhgGIA&pp=ygUgZmFudGFzeSBncm91bmRzIGltcG9ydCBjaGFyYWN0ZXI %3D

I am using 5E Ruleset, and I haven't used any other rules on Fantasy Grounds
as far as what I have set up - Originally I did a copy and paste from my copy of Treasure Hunt (I don't remember where I got it from), and in FG in the Sidebar I wrote several notes, things about the Deities of the Forgotten Realms/Sword Coast, Information on the Korrin Archipelago, how the calendar works, names of months and holidays, etc.
As far as the characters, my players rolled their own using 4d6 drop lowest, and have been working their way through the adventure. The characters are not appearing on the Party Sheet or Combat Tracker in the Module that I purchased from the Fantasy Grounds store - this means I don't have record of who has what treasure, who has a Favor from the Goddess, etc. I'm hoping you might know where I could find the missing information in the Smiteworks/Fantasy Grounds /Campaigns folder
Does that clarify what I'm trying to say?

I still don't have a clear picture, but let's try getting back to basics on this.
As you've found the original campaign directory in the FG campaigns directory, what is that directory called? This will be the name of the campaign within Fantasy Grounds. To help see what may be going on, please open that specific campaign directory in file explorer, enable the detailed view (so we can see file size and date) and then take a screenshot of that directory and attach that screenshot here.

I'm attempting to upload a screenshot using the Manage Attachment button, but I keep getting the message that I don't have permission to access this page, even after logging off and logging back in. I had this problem last time I tried to add an image. And the image is JPG format

I think the first thing we need to do is work on definitions. Campaigns are the overall structure for running in FGU. Each campaign can hold different players, characters, NPCs, etc. Modules are blocks of saved information that can include Player Handbooks, Gamemaster material, adventure modules, maps, etc. When using FGU, you don't load characters into modules. You load them into campaigns.
What you need to do, is to open your original campaign (making sure to use the universal module extension, one theme that you want the FGU desktop to look like), and then inside that campaign, load all of the modules that you want to run with (PHB, DMG, and the Treasure Vault module).

I just looked at the 2 youtube videos, one on Import Characters, and the other for Managing Characters. When I click to Import Characters in the Character Wizard, the pre-generated characters show up, but not the 3 player characters, and I'm at a loss to where else to look for the existing characters

I'm with you on the Campaign issue, I have a couple of campaigns, but the campaign I'm working with is Treasure Hunt by Aaron Alston, and when I go into the Module Activation, there is a Module N4 Treasure Hunt (1E), and there is no longer the option for Treasure Hunt by Aaron Alston in any of the Drop Down Menu's I've got the DMG, Rules for Starter and Essential sets, Sword Coast guide etc

"Treasure Hunt by Aaron Alston" is the name of your original campaign, right? If so, you need to load "Treasure Hunt by Aaron Alston" as the campaign from the FG startup screen via the "Load Campaign" screen, you can't load a campaign from within another campaign.

As mentioned above, "N4 Treasure Hunt (1E)" is the name of the module. A module is library data that you open within a campaign, it is not a campaign you load.

Thanks for approving the image. That helps a lot.
Looking at the db files - the current on (db.xml) is the database file and this is small - 28kb. Earlier db.session files are much larger - 557kb on 10/7. You need to use the earlier file from 10/7.
With Fantasy Grounds not running, make a backup copy of the campaign directory, then follow the steps in this Wiki article: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1207304196/Restore+Campaign+to+an+Earlier+Save to get your campaign db.xml file to be the same as db.session.20231008.xml

Okay, the characters, notes, etc, you created in your original campaign are still in that campaign, the new module from the store cannot see them.
However, if you use the Universal Module extension as described above to open the store version in 5e, you can import the characters by opeing the Characters screen and clicking on the blue uparrow at the bottom, which is the import button. You should see all the 5e characters and import them into the store campaign.

Might I recommend taking a couple of classes from Fantasy Grounds Academy? https://www.fantasygroundsacademy.com/
This link here will also be of good use. https://www.fantasygroundsacademy.com/post/mastering-the-fantasy-grounds-unity-platform-a-comprehensive-guide-for-new-users
It may not look it, but FG is a massively powerful tool that lets you accomplish a lot. And like all powerful tools it's useful with better training.
