View Full Version : Token Rotation on a Rotated Hex Grid

If I place a hex grid on a map (the one with the flat parts at the top and bottom) and drop a token on it (example attached), the token looks correct and rotation works as expected.

However, if I have a map and place the hex grid that is rotated 30 degrees (pointy bits at the top and bottom) and drop the same token on the map it can never stand upright and the rotation choices do not allow it to be upright.

I probably understand why it is this way as movement on the map follows the flat faces of the hexes but it is quite annoying for things like letter tokens or tokens for other things that should always be upright.

I know tokens are not supposed to freely rotate like images, but maybe have tokens default to standing upright on a map but once rotated follow the flat faces.

The only simple solution I could come up with and still use tokens was to rotate all my tokens by 30 degrees in my paint program and then I could get them to stand upright.

If you enable Token: Facing Indicator in the Options panel, the orientation of tokens will be indicated by an arrow, rather than rotating the token.

1) These tokens are for overland map static (unless destroyed) assets like farms, mines, quarries, forestry operations, etc

2) I don't see the facing indicator when I turn that on, but would not be helpful even if it did work

You could also drag the token asset into the Painting->Tile Stamp mode of the unlocked image record using the image data control; and then stamp the image onto a layer you create for those sorts of objects. Then, you don't have to worry about rotation at all. Tokens are meant for movable units, not for decoration; which is why it's not fitting what you want.

As mentioned by Moon Wizard - I wouldn't use tokens for these. Use images. You'll have more granular control over size and orientation, and you won't be forever clicking on tokens-that-aren't-really-tokens on your map.
