Please explain to me the process for adding an animal companion for a druid character.

Would recommend "(SR) DnD Companions" -- free module

This provides a bunch of pregenerated characters which correspond to various possible companions and familiars, with a lot already set up.

Tweak for correctness (e.g. adjusting saving throws and skill modifiers) to taste. Allow the Druid player to claim that character and have them switch between them.
