View Full Version : "license conflict" running a second FG (player) instance

My usual routine has always been to run a second FG instance locally so that I can see my players' view of things. I find this makes a lot of things run more smoothly. Sometime in the last two weeks, this has stopped working, and I'm not sure why.

I'm using FGU 4.4.3 on MacOS 13.4
D&D 5E rules (although I doubt that's relevant)

Here's my process on game night:

run any updates
duplicate the FG application folder to create a second app I can run (necessary due to the way Macs deal with starting apps)
run the original, Load my campaign in cloud mode
run the second copy, Join Campaign by GM name

I've been doing this exactly the same way every game night for the last couple of years, and the last time I did this was July 1. Tonight, when I start up, I'm getting the following error when I try to join the running campaign:

Authorization failed: License key conflict.

I found some old posts about this from 2017, and tried the advice there of connecting to localhost instead of the cloud game, but that just sits forever waiting. It seems like the GM instance isn't listening for local connections, only cloud connections.

Has something changed? Have I inadvertently screwed something up in the last couple of weeks?

Thanks.

I don't know much about macs (well nothing at all really) but here's how to run a second instance on a mac here https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/2072641544/How+to+Open+Multiple+Instances+of+Fantasy+Grounds+ Unity

Thanks, that seems to work.
I wonder what has changed in the last couple of weeks to make my old process not-work... but at this point that's just curiosity.

Cheers!

It doesn't work for me. I managed to open a second copy with no problem, but it just sits and says Authorization failed: License Key Conflict.

I have the Ultimate License running a private cloud-based game, and I'm trying to connect to myself in order to make a test PC so I can test some effects I've made.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Net

You'll need to remove your license key from the player instance (in settings), save the setting and then do an update if you want to connect to another computer running FG with the same license key.

Start a second instance on the same computer as the GM and join the game. The second instance on the same computer doesn't check for the same license key.

I am doing it from the same computer. I'm running Fantasy Grounds from my M1 MacBook Air. If I try to run a second instance and 'Join' it keeps throwing an error.

That's how I've been doing it. It opens a second instance correctly. Opens it atop the first instance, but then fails with an error while joining the game.

Just to be clear, I've tried joining from the cloud, by putting in my User ID, and I've also tried to connect via the lan, and neither are working.

======EDIT: Nevermind, I finally got it to work. Maybe it was an Internet issue. This time I tried to log on, and it went to a failure due to lack of password, I entered the password, hit retry and it went.. sorry!
