View Full Version : Tokens vs Portraits - I'm missing something

Hi All, just starting out with FGU, and have most things working as I'd expect, but I'm not getting the Token / Portrait usage in FGU quite right (using the 5e ruleset).

My expectations would be that:
* The Player Portrait is shown in the top left for each active character
* The Player Token is shown in the Party Sheet, Combat Tracker and on Maps

What I'm finding however is that the Portrait is used everywhere.

I do have separate Token and Portrait images set up on the PCs, and these show as expected on the character sheet.

How do I get FGU (5e) to use the Token image assigned to the PC in the Combat Tracker and on Maps, but the Portrait where larger images are used such as the list of characters at the top left? Alternately, are my expectations of how the Portraits vs Tokens work simply wrong?

Welcome to the FG forums!

The PC portrait is shown in the Party sheet, not the token.

I can't recall if the token assigned to a PC used to auto-sync to the Combat Tracker, but this is what happens now: the token assigned to the PC when the PC is added to the Combat Tracker will be what is shown in the combat tracker and on the map. If you change the token on the PC sheet, also change the token on the combat tracker (drag/drop a token asset - you can drag/drop the token from the PC sheet to the CT) which will also change the token that is on the map (if the token was dragged from the CT).

Thanks @Trenloe - had another look this evening and it appears to have been a glitch - perhaps something I did wrong in the sequencing when I was assigning Portraits and Tokens to the PCs.

It definitely was showing the Portrait rather than the Token in the CT, even though the Token and Portrait were very noticeably different - after removing everyone from the CT and Party Sheet, reassigning their Portraits and Tokens (to the same ones they were already set to) and adding them back it seems to be just fine now :)

Really enjoying getting up and running with FGU, first session in a few days so fingers crossed - really appreciate your help :)

With most rulesets, when you assign a portrait it will automatically make a token based on the portrait. So if you add the token first, it will get over written when you add the portrait. Maybe that's what happened?

At least in the 5e ruleset you can add a token first and it won't be overwritten if you then later add a portrait. If, on the other hand, you add a portrait first then place the character on the CT and then add a token to the character sheet the token on the CT (and thus any map the character is on) won't change. So add a portrait and a token before adding the character to the CT. (This also applies to the party sheet as well. Whatever token the character has at the time they are placed on the party sheet will be the one that shows. Changing the token later won't update the party sheet).

In both cases changing the portrait does change what is shown on the party sheet and the CT if those currently show the original portrait; this happens even if the character has been given a token but that token isn't shown on the party sheet or CT).

Great details, thanks :)
