If a map has lights somewhere on it and a token is placed on the map then the player can faintly see the rooms with lights. The two images below illustrate this with the Cragmaw Hideout map from Lost Mine of Phandelver. This is a new campaign without extensions. In the first image the token has just been placed on the map and the player can see the room to the north of their position as faintly gray. If I remove the token, turn off lights and then replace the token the player can no longer see the room to the north and everything is as expected. Turning the lighting back on and moving the player token reveals the room to the north once again.
Edit: Here's an addendum. It looks like it may have something to do with range as well. In the same map as above if I move the token to the right then it also lights up the room which is lit on the right hand side of the map. If the token is far enough to the left when placed only the room to the north is 'visible'; but as I move it to the right the right hand room also lights up when I reach a certain point on the map.
