View Full Version : Syrinscape integration request - display Soundset name.

It's very hard to determine what Syrinscape sound link to play or link from the Sound: Settings board.

For example, search for "more music" of type = mood and you'll get 2 pages of matches - with over 30 just called "More Music" - see screenshot below. Without playing these, you won't know exactly what they are; for example - one is from a Friendly tavern and one is from a Basilisk battle, both of which could spoil the mood if used inappropriately.

Adding the Soundset name to the list would help immensely in determining which sound to use.

I've added a request to the wishlist here: https://fgapp.idea.informer.com/proj/fgapp?ia=141007

If you'd like to see something like this, please go vote!

I voted for this and I also added the other day the ability to sort syrinscape sounds. When you get the list of sounds it would be great to have the ability to sort them!

I was about to put in the same suggestion myself: if the soundset name was displayed (and if sound elements were grouped by soundset) I would ditch the use of Syrinscape control panel completely and manage it only from within FGU; as things are now though, my plan is to use FGU only for theweapon/spell/oneshot sounds, integrated with user actions, and manage the mood from the usual control panel

Another consideration: adding the soundset name helps in particular with published adventures.
Syrinscape has specific soundsets for published D&D 5E adventures, like Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, or Dungeon of the Mad Mage, of SpellJammer: Light of Xaryxis to name a few. If a DM is running the adventure on FGU, being able to find the corresponding soundsets in the Syrinscape panel is a more than reasonable expectation. Showing the numeric ID on the UI, instead, I don't think is useful for a user: personally I'd like to see the ID column dropped and replaced by the soundset name.

You can filter the soundsets to a particular sound set like one of the adventure modules using the product dropdown at the bottom of the window.

For unknown reasons I was sure that the Product dropdown allowed me to choose between Syrinscape Fantasy, Syrinscape SciFi and Syrinscape Boardgame sounds. Don't know why I believed that, I think I confused the Product with Subcategory dropdowns.
In that case, I'm going to change my suggestion into changing the name of the dropdown from Product to Soundset (since that's the name used in Syrinscape) - naming consistency helps users find what they want.

Its a problem with how the Syrinscape Team named them not a FGU problem. The same thing will come up if you type "more coffee"

Which is why we're requesting the Soundset name be displayed in the list in FG so that we can differentiate between the sounds.

EDIT: As your screenshot shows, Syrinscape displays the soundset name. See my screenshot in post #1 of this thread - in FG you can't determine which soundset each sound comes from.

Thank you fantasy grounds team for the quick edits.

The Syrinscape developers are going (or have been) in touch to let you know how to get more out of their API for things like volume control etc.

I would like to hope you can use this (and Syrinscape) to really grow the customer / community base. The interface you have is actually faster in many cases than using the online player - great job.

A nice potential future tweak would be the list what type of sound is playing (mood, sfx).

But at the moment quite happy to give it a bash and make it sound fantastic.

Is it my imagination or did the context sound menu used to show what type of sound each one was, and that's gone with the latest update? Or did I imagine that?

Needless to say I completely agree with andrewcr, given the whimsical naming conventions of Syrinscape, it's super useful to know if you're about to trigger a one-shot, an SFX loop, music or a mood in the context sound window. Especially since you can sometimes have multiple sounds with the same name.

The basic flow I use is to pick a suitable mood, (maybe fine-tuned in Syrinscape outside the seession as registered as a new mood). Then during the session I add a few SFX loops to fine tune it, maybe music if the mood doesn't have one or if you want to change pace part way through a scene (eg when a battle breaks out). Then hit one-shots when big baddies get their turn on stage or the temple collapses or whatever.

Then on to the mood/SFX/music/Oneshot collection for the next scene.

Many thanks for adding Image to the sound system - suits my map-centric organisation a treat!

Cheers, Hywel

The latest filter changes are great, and I hate to be "That Guy"... but I would like to also be able to filter by Sound Set, not just by Sound Pack.

Isn't that the soundset field? Or do you mean you want to type forest?

Syrinscape is a bit confusing with naming conventions. I think what nick is saying is you can now search for Sound Pack, (e.g. Dragonlance - Shadow of the Dragon Queen Part 2) which includes all soundsets, moods, elements, etc, but he also wants to be able to search for soundset (e.g. SDQ the city of kalaman) which contain multiple moods.

To help understand:
A soundpack is what you buy in Syrinscape's store:
57983
For example in this instance, the Spelljammer: Light of Xaryxis soundpack made for the homonymous D&D adventure.
Each soundpack is composed of multiple soundsets, usually 1 per chapter of the adventure but sometimes one soundset covers multiple chapters:
57984
When you use Syrinscape's Dashboard, you select one specific soundset from your organised campaign to have access to the moods, oneshots and sound effects that you need (circled in red in this picture)

I missed this with my quick run through of the update. I was expecting (hoping) that it would be the Syrinscape SoundSet that was displayed, rather than the Sound Pack name. It's an improvement no doubt, but it would be nice to have the Syrinscape SoundSet name displayed, rather than the sound pack, as the sound pack really has little to do with what you actually see in the Syrinscape player - so it's hard to compare between the two; plus you don't see anything if you've created a custom sound set in Syrinscape.

We need both, methinks - could even be combined in one column, for example as "<Soundpack>/<Soundset>". Either that, or there should be a filter by "campaign", although I am not sure if the Syrinscape APIs allow it.
See for example this campaign in Syrinscape that I prepared:
57986
The "Desert" and "Dragon Battle" soundsets have names that are shared with multiple other soundsets, belonging to different soundpacks. So just showing the soundset does not help filtering or figuring out if you're looking at the right one, it might actually be more confusing than seeing only the soundpack names in certain situations.

I wouldn't like that, as it can already spread across multiple lines, restricting the number of sounds you can see at once. Combining SoundPack and SoundSet together could result in only seeing a handful of sounds in some cases.

For example:

Sure, each soundset can have moods, music, sfx and oneshots that are used in other soundsets; which I think is what you're saying? If this isn't what you're saying, maybe we're not using the same terminology here. I think that there is only ever one Syrinscape SoundsSet of a specific name - for example, the Desert soundset: https://syrinscape.com/store/123-desert/ this is the only soundset that is called "Desert". Looking at the desktop fantasy player, there are no soundsets with the same name.

https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=57988

Ultimately, we're relying on Syrinscape to use a meaningful name for a soundset. They usually have a three letter code in a soundset name to indicate the adventure it's from (COS = Curse of Strahd, for example). Sure, more information is better than less - so, maybe add SoundSet and SoundPack name as two new columns in the FG interface. If we're only going to get one column to avoid interface size creep, I'd prefer SoundSet over SoundPack - as soundset is a lower level in the hierarchy than soundpack, it appears to be unique and will also show names for custom soundsets made by the GM in the Syrinscape web interface.

That's a fair point, screen real estate is already limited as it is.

No, I was saying that multiple Soundsets can have the same name - or at least I believed they could, but apparently I was wrong for the official soundsets.
Now I wonder, though: since it's possible to create your own soundsets in Syrinscape, would the constraint on the uniqueness of the name be enforced also on private soundsets? Does FGU have access to them or is it limited to public soundsets?

EDIT: I just tried: it's possible to create a private soundset with the exact same name as a publishet soundset, so it looks like the uniqueness of the soundsets names relies on the Syrinscape team being careful when they publish new content, but it doesn't prevent users from creating their own private soundsets using names already in use by other soundsets.

Interesting. Good find.

There's no Sound Pack name for custom soundsets (at least, it's blank in FG), so maybe just a small icon showing the custom soundsets would help with keeping real-estate reasonable, but also allow GMs to differentiate between the standard "Desert" soundset and the "Desert" soundset they created.

You guys may have to reach out to Syrinscape for providing any additional data. We only get what is provided in the CSV dump from Syrinscape.

This is what we get now; and all of those fields are included in the Syrinscape Sound Settings filters already.

Looking at the Sound Settings panel,
57993
and comparing it to the CSV, I assume that:
the Name filter maps to the name column on the csv,
the ID filter to the id column,
the Type filter to type column,
the Category filter to subcategory {?} column,
and Sound Pack to product_or_pack column.

Trenloe's suggestion is that in the table showing the content of "soundset" instead of "product_or_pack" is more useful, since a product_or_pack is made of a lot of soundsets, and each (official, non private) soundset has a unique name anyway;
it would also be very useful to have a soundset filter (which is currently missing), because taking for example Spelljammer: if I select Spelljammer - Light Of Xaryxis in the sound pack filter, I get the whole pack, and I can't filter it down to the chapter that I am playing (since the chapters are soundsets inside the product_or_pack). This is more or less the situation of most Syrinscape products - only the largest ones have one Sound Pack per chapter (like Rime of the Frostmaiden), and in general that happens when a chapter is so big that it needs to be split further in smaller parts.

The problem with the custom soundsets is separate and definitely needs some extra work on Syrinscape's part, so yeah I'll see to send a request their way

Yeah, @Trenloe and I have been discussing this over the last hour or so. The problem is that the CSV data provided by Syrinscape does not match visually to what is shown in the Syrinscape web player. I've fired off an email to them to see how best to match things up; so we'll see what they say.

I'm going to leave as is for now, because the "soundset" data in the file maps even less obviously to the web player data (from looking at many examples).

Meanwhile I would recommend using Mattekure's extension (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/117/view) to have that functionality (edit: the "soundset as a filter" one). Also a good addition to that one the chat triggers module (https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/118/view)

EDIT: As a workaround, I edited my csv and copied the data from the "soundset" to the "product_or_pack" fields. I used this online tool (https://www.convertcsv.com/csv-viewer-editor.htm) for that. Then I imported my modified csv and now I have my content filtered by soundset instead of soundpack :)
