Can Version 1 & Version 2 Clients Talk With Each Other?

Is Fantasy Grounds Version 1 compatible with Fantasy Grounds Version 2?

If you hosted a game, and not all of the players had upgraded, is it a problem?

The two versions do not talk to eachother I am afraid.
Communications is done in a new way for FG2.

The two versions install side by side instead of on top of each other so there no reason a person with a legal copy of FG1 should not upgrade to FG2 since he will still have a copy of FG1 which he can run in any game with an old ruleset.
