View Full Version : Tales of the Valiant

Hello, with the Kickstarter starting up today and a question was asked. The question, Will Tales of the Valiant be able to use previous 5E content? Of course the other 5E Kobold Press material. Kobold Press responded and said its up to the VTT's to decide that.
Will Tales of the Valiant be a add on for 5E or will it use a whole other ruleset that is not compatible with 5E material?

It will depend on the licensing I would imagine, plus with the new ORC license they may want to make sure that there isn't any confusion for the user/gm and they have to explicitly use the Universal loader.

Has there been any update on this? I'm looking at buying the Midgard Bundle, but I'm not going to buy it, if it's not going to be compatible with ToV

Not sure anyone here knows yet. I would suggest you r reach out to ToV Kickstarter/IP holder and see if you can get a response from them.

I sent a ticket through Kobold Press website. Will inform everyone as soon as they respond

Just got a response from Kobold Press. Here you go:
Thanks for reaching out! Our intention is to ensure that 5E and Tales of the Valiant are compatible and that both systems can be integrated at the same pen-and-paper table seamlessly. Integrating compatibility through VTTs is a bit trickier, but we’re building our VTT ruleset with the intention of making our existing content compatible.
For Fantasy Grounds, which is a platform that can allow users to pull material from separate rulesets, my understanding is that most adventures and compendiums already available should work with the Tales of the Valiant once we release the FG ruleset. Some things, like player options, subclasses etc. may be more difficult to incorporate at the outset, though we’ll continue to work to make that possible. In the case of the Midgard Worldbook, for example, there should be no difficulty making it compatible.
I hope that helps in making a decision. Effectively, some things will be compatible right out of the box, and some things will require a little more tweaking from us to ensure they work together.

That's great news. They're already on it. KP already has a huge presence on fantasy grounds, so its nice to see they're continuing full steam.

Any news on when ToV is going to be available on FG? Alchemy and Demiplane are already live with the release of the official Player and Monster PDFs this week.
Thanks in advance!

I'm also interested in this... I have the PDFs (thanks for the heads up about Demiplane!) but would love to have the FGU modules as well.

A bit disappointed in the lack of response on this thread, and the same question posted on the Kickstarter page.

If you noticed from previous responses and post #6, the only ones who have the information you seek is Kobold Press. And I don't recall them ever posting on the forums here. It's unfortunate that the KS inquiry hasn't gotten you the answers you seek, but either there or directly with KP are probably your best places to get updated information on the project to get ToV on FG.

FYI, a FULL FG conversion of the TOV Player's Guide and Monster Vault were included in the Kickstarter at the $150 tier, which ended over a year ago and is fulfilling now.
Since Kobold Press would have to work with SmiteWorks for that fulfillment, I was hoping they would have an update on it's progress - especially since their VTT competitors already have them completed, for sale to the general public, and fulfilled to Kickstarter pledges.

Typically, SmiteWorks involvement is only in a quality review and approval prior to distribution. They do not do the conversion themselves. And typically they, as a company, do not comment because they have no control over when the actual work gets done. There have been cases of other 3rd party products failing the SmiteWorks review and then taking many many months to get fixed and resubmitted.
I don't remember the product name and it wouldn't help if I did, but their was another KS a few years back that made public statements that their product would be in FG in days because they had just submitted it to SW. Well, it took a week or two for the review, which failed. Best I could tell from what happened after that... the person who did the conversion for the KS didn't want to do the fixes (or couldn't). It took the KS many months to find someone to agree to make the fixes, and months more for it to actually get released as an FG product.
I would hope KP has a better handle on the process. Because this is not the first KS they have done an FG version for. The purpose of relating that is just to say that the process has many steps, and passes through multiple hands and not all of them are always transparent to each other, and therefore can be hard to accurately comment. And so SW tends to just not comment at all and the best source of information is the party, KP, that is the IP owner since they are the only ones who have visibility into all the steps.

Just received this Kickstarter update:
Fantasy Grounds VTT
The team at Smiteworks is working diligently to bring Tales of the Valiant to you. The Kobolds do not have a release timeline, but we will update you as soon as we have more information.

I’m still waiting to receive my physical books. I’ve contacted their customer service 3x so far (once a month) and have not heard anything from them. I even went to discord and that wasn’t much help. So when it comes to the VTT, it’s not surprising

That is very unfortunately, my condolences Sundance. Hopefully it gets resolved soon.
My gripe is Alchemy has been up and running with ToV contents for months now, Foundry same with BlackFlag content (which is 70+% ToV), and Roll20 is nearly complete. FG progress ... nothing but crickets. SW has posted to this thread they have no control over Kickstarters, yet KP says they are "working diligently" on it. Bit of a contradiction; or maybe bad wording? In either case, it would be nice if someone would stand tall and own it rather than passing the buck. From a distance this looks like a black eye to me, being last to the table, and disappointing to those of us who have supported FG all these years.
Nothing you can do but wait I suppose. :(:(:(

My apologies if that statement was incorrect. LordEntrails reply to this thread sure sounded official. I now see the one-line statement saying he is not an employee. Very well hidden. Fool me once, I suppose ...
It is good to finally get a comment from someone on it. My thanks.

Well we don't comment or share information till it's in a position to relay that information. We have shared information in the past and then the content never really reached completion and release. We don't like disappointing our community and that can happen if things fall through. This is still not a confirmation the product is ready for release, but it's being worked on and in being tested at this point.

I understand completely. My disappointment came from the material being available on several other VTTs, and (at the time) no comment from anyone on the status of the FG project. It took a month for KP to respond to any Kickstarter comments on the status of it as well. For me, I would rather hear something is going to be late than hear nothing at all.
Thank you again.

I'm sorry you somehow felt I was representing SmiteWorks. You're not the first. And it's why I put that statement in my signature. But you are the first I'm aware of since I added that statement. Maybe I should be honored that I provide well written posts.
But I'm also annoyed. I try to be careful with my language. Note when referring to SmiteWorks or the devs I use the pronouns "they" or "them" and never "us" or "we"? I'm not going to put a big bold banner at the start of every post saying I'm not a SW employee etc. Heck, I'm the only user on the forums that seems to need to even put a statement in their sig that they are not.
Ok, I'm trying to be helpful here, but feel anything else I add at the moment would be not be constructive.

You'd have to ask Kobold Press, they're the ones who are doing the ruleset. Last update from them was in August saying they were working on it but there was no timeline yet.

I imagine Celeste is talking generally there, but in the case for the ToV adaptation to Fantasy Grounds, Kobold Press has a developer they have engaged to do the work, so vegaserik is correct.
Regardless, that developer has done their thing and Tales of the Valiant content is in the final stages of review. We'll be sharing a release date on Fantasy Grounds very soon (talking weeks not months).
Thanks!

Nice! I too am awaiting this from the Kickstarter. I imagine all the changes to 5e probably didn't help or is ToV going to be it's own ruleset?

Looks like it got added, got my Kickstarter keys today.
Just started playing with it. Loaded the ToV extension, and set the game to legacy 5e, which I think is what you are supposed to do.
Two things off the bat with the character wizard. Making a fighter, equipment selection seems to be not right, got two identical choices for just a couple of weapons instead of all the choices needed.
So, started making the choices manually (drag and drop on the character sheet) and the explorer's pack doesn't work. Get: "Attempt to open wildcard links(s) that do not match any loaded module data. Check your active Library modules." and then a bunch of busted links in the chat window.
The two modules I have loaded are Tales of the Valiant Players Guide and Tales of the Valiant Monster Vault.
Edit: just checked the monster vault, added an Astral Destroyer to the Combat Tracker, and the save for the Tail Whip isn't being parsed correctly. I'm guessing that's true of everything using ToV wording for saves vs 5E wording for saves. Is an update to the parser coming? Otherwise automation isn't going to work well.

I will look at your reports, but you should be setting the game rules version to 'ToV'
62399
The explorer's pack issue is related to the module data and we'll let the developer know.
As for the NPC parsing, we will be looking into trying to get it fine tuned, but might have some shortcomings with every attack coming out perfectly.
I have pushed a hotfix for the class kits not showing correct choices in the character wizard.
