View Full Version : Unplayably slow performance moving tokens or rolling dice.

FG has been working great for months, we started the current campaign in Dec. We'll play for an hour, maybe less and then the game turns into a slideshow. It gets progressively worse until you can't move the tokens at all or roll dice. Assuming it was resources I shut down all running apps on my machine other than FG and Discord but it had no effect on the issue. I unloaded everything except for the core rulebooks and the module itself and I disabled all extensions. No effect. If I shut down the server and restart it performance will be normal for 5-30 minutes, but then eventually the slideshow returns. Task manager shows me running at 20-30% CPU, 35% memory, less than 5% disk. This has only ever happened on one map "J Private hangar 7"... I have not yet tested any other maps since the problem began two weeks ago, but we've run the entire module and never had a problem until now.
I put the campaign up on google drive.

Thanks in advance with your assistance with this.

hey TimothyWatson
Some things to try:
https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1638006786/Reducing+GPU+Usage
/vsync 0
Each player should do this.
If a player has a slower computer or graphics card they might try
/vsync 2
3 or 4
You might also try:
https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/1315930113/Player+and+NPC+Token+Vision+on+Maps
set an effect
VISMAX 100
or smaller
on each player to reduce line of sight calculations on large maps

It sounds like something is eating up all the processing cycles either on graphics, CPU or network; which causes everything else to slow down. This is usually caused by extensions or large/complex images, but could possibly be ruleset related as well depending on what you guys are doing.
What module is the image "J Private hangar 7" in? (I didn't see it in campaign files.)
Are all the machines running at a crawl when rolling dice, or is it just the GM machine that encounters the slow downs?
What type of stuff are you doing in the campaign currently? (mostly RP, pictures, planning?; space battles?; personnel battles?; other?)
Is there any type of activity that you guys seem to be doing before it slows down?
When did you start noticing the slow downs? (Immediately after starting campaign?; after you started using a certain module?; at a later date after updates?; other?)
Thanks,

The image is under /images/maps
Its biggish but certainly not massive.
There are bigger images in that campaign.

I'm not sure where it is in the module, it's not one of mine it came in the module. It's an official map.
In the story it's labeled "3.J.00 Private hangar 7". When you open the map in the top left it says "J Private Hangar 7", and to the right of that "Unidentified Map / Image". Note: I turned off all lighting and LoS. But that had no effect.
One of my players has a really crappy internet connection if that makes a difference, but even when he's not in the group, even after I've rebooted once he's left, I still get the slideshow.

Are you using a discord bot for sound at the same time? I know of one user that when he did that it caused similar issues to what you are experiencing. It basically caused FGU to hang or slow down. He ended up moving the bot connection to a spare computer and the issues went away.

I took a look at the map and there isn't anything remarkable about it. The map itself should not be impacting performance. Are you running any extensions? How many tokens were typically active on that map?

Another thing to look at, and I don't know how badly it affects performance these days, is if you loaded a lot of maps or tokens into your assets. At one point early with FGU I tried loading all of my thousands of art assets and ran into performance problems. So now I only import them when needed.

I had probably 25 tokens including the party, but after I encountered the issue I deleted half of them, with no effect. By the end there was 12, including the party. With Los disabled and no lights.
I reinstalled my video drivers and I'm going to have them all run vsync 3 and see what happens. Thanks!

I am running Discord, but no bot. I'm using voicemod on a completely different computer and connecting it to discord separately to run the ambient and combat music with special effects. Boo Ya!

Just a thought, but if you installed through Steam have you turned off the overlay? Or ran it without steam?
