View Full Version : 5e Distance not measuring properly with height

I wanted to test the height thing, so I jumped into a basic story build campaign I have with no extensions to test it out, with on PC and an NPC. I set the height of the PC to 30' and left the NPC at base (didn't adjust height at all). When targeting NPC with PC It either provides the normal ground distance or just the height distance depending on which is larger, instead of giving the distance+height.

Did you move either of the tokens to see if the distance is changing or being calculated as you move?

Yes, I tried moving and it will stay at the vertical/height distance until the horizontal/ground distance is greater at which point it just shows the horizontal/ground distance

Version 4.3.3 (2023-02)

Token distance calculation adjusted to handle overlapping tokens better.
Targeting distance label hidden when distance rounds to zero.
Targeting arrow hidden when edges of tokens touch or overlap.

None of those three apply in this case, the tokens are not touching, overlapped, or rounded to zero. Basically if Token A is 30' in height, and token B is 25' away horizontally it will say distance is 30', if Token B is 40' away horizontally it will say 40'. Instead of the 55' or 70' that might be expected in those examples

Are you using the optional diagonal distance option? If not, the distance is calculated by the longest length of the triangle, i.e. diagonal distances are the same, not 1.5 squares.

I don't believe so, since I did it in a building campaign those options were set to the default options. O think I may have confused things more by saying horizonal/vertical. But I'd assume that the height modifier would be added to the square distance instead of using whichever is larger.

BUT, now that I've said it, I went and tested it. And it appears to be working as you desired for me, with the Default value for Map: Diagonal Distance. See screenshot.

If you have a specific example where this is not working, please provide a screen shot showing the issue, so we can see the targeting token, the targeted token and the target arrow.

Also, please note what your Options setting is for "Map: Diagonal Distance" as well as which game system you are using.

Sorry, 5e, I mentioned in the forum topic but not in the main post.

This one is on me, for some reason my mind has always assumed height distance was a special metric in 5e D&D ( maybe since my mind is still stuck in older systems when it comes to some scenarios for rules) and didn't realize how the 5e rules handle height.
