View Full Version : Any update on Dual monitor support?

I know this is the number #1 requested change to FG, but I am finding it really hard to use without dual monitors. I use the Rolemaster system and the number of tables I have to have open is enormous, it REALLY slows down the game with the use of only one monitor. Is dual monitor even possible? I think it would be greatly appreciated by all DMs/GMs!

It is not possible. Stretching across multiple screens or a bigger screen are your options.

As damned says it's not supported by the Unity engine and even if it were the way FGU handles windows (they aren't windows really) it isn't possible to drag one outside of the FGU main window. However you can stretch the FG window across multiple screens which amounts to the same thing. Just grab the side of the window and pull it across onto your second screen.

Ok then should it be removed from the whishlist website?

It was but someone put it back in. And if it's removed then someone will just keep putting it back in.

Things could change. The Unity platform used by FG may start supporting it at some time in the future.

Just a thought, what about a way to log in a second time as the DM OR as a Player and run 2 windows? I know as a DM I can log in as a player but that only gives me player level control (although that can still be helpful)

You can't have two GM instances running against the same campaign, they'll clash and probably corrupt the campaign data file.

Yes, you will corrupt the campaign data file if you have two GM instances in the same campaign. Been there, done that.

Ok, stretching it is. :)

I have the same issue but I want to share a map on a horizontal flat screen display at home. The limitation of unity to a single viewport could be potentially overcome using a WebGL render to a webpage, so multiple browser webpages could be opened. But this will need some work in the developers side first. For now, I will have to use a second laptop running as a player sharing through discord or zoom to show the horizontal map display at home.

Open a second instance of FG and connect to your game. Put this instance on flat screen.

See here for how to do as @damned says https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/2072641544/How+to+Open+Multiple+Instances+of+Fantasy+Grounds+ Unity

I've been stretching FGU over two monitors for so long now I no longer care if they ever support two monitors or not. *LOL*
We play in person using two large screen TVs for the player side, same thing, just grab FGU and stretch it out to fit.

Does this require any trickery to launch the second instance? Please don’t tell me I need to setup Docker or some **** like that 😅🤣

If you are on Windows or Linux, it just requires opening the program twice.

Dual monitor support in Unity **IS** possible. It's in their documentation on their site and Arkenforge uses a version of it where you can enable the second monitor as a player screen or a GM screen to which you can drag windowed content.

My understanding is that Arkenforge is Windows only.
The challenge has never been that Unity does not support multiple application windows, but that their is not a library that supports multiple application windows on multiple operating systems, specifically the 3 O/S's that FGU supports. The FG devs have stated that once their is such a library (and it is stable) they will be looking to implement it.
Note, having a GM and Player separate windows has always been possible in FG (at least for 10 years I've been using FG) . All that you do is launch a second instance, as already explained by others.

Windows and Mac. But fair enough. Need Linux too.

Yep, it's easy to launch a second instance as a player screen. Though for tabletop play on a panel or projection, would be nice to be able to hide chat window etc.
Also, stretching GM instance across multiple monitors does work mostly but there is a lot of re-sizing and fiddling and still need to have a Player instance running to validate what players will see.

You can move the chat frame off the screen by unlocking it and moving to the bottom edge. You'll still see the top of the frame, but it would hide it. I recommend in case you want to move it back.

Also, increase the size of any shared image (e.g. a map) to maximum, you won't see the chat window and sidebar. You can also hide the dice. See the "13. Increase Size" option here: https://fantasygroundsunity.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/FGCP/pages/996640166/Working+with+Images+as+the+GM#Image-Windows-and-Icons

Stretching works pretty well for me. The increase in real estate makes a lot of difference. One thing to take note of is to make sure your second screen is the same size as your main screen or you get a mismatch as in my picture. I have since bought another monitor and it works perfectly.
I may change but at the moment I keep the map and story on the right and everything else on the left.

I do the same, but vertically: chat/dice/tracker/etc. on the lower monitor, map on the upper one
